Default 40% of U.S. PS3 owners: "This thing has Blu-ray?"

link: http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/

40% of American PS3 owners: This thing has Blu-ray?

Reports flies in the face of BD take up boasts
by Amy-Mae Elliott

9 August 2007 - An amusing report from the NPD Group, the "Next Gen Functionality & Usage" study suggests that 40% of PlayStation 3 owners were not aware the console could play Blu-ray discs.

Further research showed that 50% of those that did know about the feature didn't use the console for watching movies.

Adding salt to the HD-capable wound, only 50% of those PS3-ers polled knew that their machine was even capable of high-def graphics.

It might console Sony's marketing department to know that the figure for Xbox 360 owner's knowledge of that console HD-capabilities came in at an even lower 30%.

Other notable results from the report mentioned lack of awareness about downloadable content from both Xbox 360| PS3'>Xbox 360 - but especially - PS3 owners.

The Blu-ray Group suggested earlier this year, with figures to back up the claim, that the PS3's Blu-ray playing abilities was helping them win the format war. (my resonse to this: it is. case in point: 300)

Sadly, I'd believe those figures. Many of the 42 people on my PSN list, were blissfully unaware of many of the PS3's capabilities, including voice/video chat, store downloads, photo apps, and how to optimize their settings for video/sound, until I had told/shown them how to do these things. Hell, there were/are 3 people on my list that didn't know how to accept friendlist invites until just this past month (unbelievably, 2 of these guys had launch PS3s). One of my real life friends owns a PS3 and a 60" HDTV, but is still using the composite cables that came pre-packaged with the PS3, and hasn't even logged into the PSN yet (I'm going over there when Madden comes out with one of my spare headsets, an HDMI cable, and my old wireless router to set him up properly, so we can do online Madden ass-kickings. Although, I'm probably the one that's gonna get schooled on the game.)

What's probably the most depressing thing about all of this, all it really takes to get up to speed is to read the instruction manual that comes with the PS3...

LOL! This is a negative?

It means that so called lack of attach rate for the PS/3 is due to ignorance, not disinterest.

How hard is it to inform PS/3 owners they own a Blu-ray player?!

I don't think its a negative or positive. I also don't think it means these people that aren't aware of its HD capabilities have an HDTV.

Maybe Sony did make a mistake by not including a high def cable? This at least would have caused some people to stop and think (if only for a second) "What's this red, green and blue cable?" Or question an HDMI cable. Then maybe they would have looked into it and discovered it had HD capabilities.

That's what I thought to myself when I bought mine back in Jan. I was all like..."Damn it! I forgot to buy an HDMI cable!!" and ran back to target to get one. It would have been nice to at least get component cables ITB, but oh well. For a negative, it's a minor one if that. Maybe this will change...and maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt.

What the f**k!!!!!
I will say, first of all, that I agree that if Sony had advertised and included (at LEAST) that little 3-colored cable, at least SOME people would have stopped to realize that "Oh....since I've got an HDTV, I wanna hook up this bad boy with this cable".
The rest of it.......sheer ignorance!!!
Go**amn that Bush!!!!!

Fun with numbers:

Let's assume the article is true.

1.5 million * .6 = 900K BD knowledgable PS/3 users.

So, we ask, if the disc sales ratio is 2:1 and we assume PS/3 are equally likely to buy discs as standalone users, of either format, what is the effective PS/3 usage rate?

300K HD DVD x 2 = 600K equivalent BD users.

Say 100K are stand-alone.

500K equivalent BD users of 900K that know they have a BD player.

5/9 = 56% usage.

Default Poor Blu ray sales -> Wake up the sleeping giant

A survey conducted by NPD group among PS3 and XBOX 360 owners shows that only 20% of PS3 owners buy Blu-ray movies. The percentage itself has been estimated before, that's nothing new. The interesting thing is why: 60% of PS3 owners don't know that the PS3 has a blu-ray drive!!! Only 50% of the knowing rest watches BD Movies.
Also only 50% of PS3 owners (30% of XBOX owners) know that their console has the capabilty of 1920x1080 video output. In case of gaming NPD Analyst Anita Frazier concludes that fun outweighs HD.

Sony should start to wake up the potential 60%.

Sell him the HDMI cable and the headset. Don't forget to bring a BD with you to show the PS3's capability - 300 would do it.

As cheap as HDMI cables are, including one would add more cost at a launch period that was fraught with high costs for SCE.

This is why fellow gamers should tell other gamers about getting a HDMI cable for the PS3-HDTV connection. Their gaming experience would be 100% better. And then you sucker them in with a BD movie.

I guess people are stupid. I mean if a game console cost that much and did NOT have something like that built in... there would be NO WAY I would buy it.

I mean, I got a Wii cause it was cheap! The PS3 was not worth it except for the fact that it is a BD player. Man people are stupid!

Its actually a better argument for Bluray. The anti-Blu group keeps spouting that the sales figures arent valid because PS3 shouldnt count. But now that the figure is more than half of the PS3 owners dont even know the PS3 is a bluray player, then their argument ruins their assumption that most of the sales are coming from PS3 owners. Can you imagine when 100% of PS3 users figure out the Bluray playback? We'll be kicking HDDVD's butt 10-to-1!!!

I don't believe that report at all. I'm sure that not everyone uses their PS3 for Blu-Ray films because not everyone who has a PS3 has an HDTV. But the claim that 60% of PS3 owners don't even know the machine is also a Blu-Ray player is absurd. No one is going to drop 500$ on a console without knowing what it's capable of.

No it's not. Never underestimate the stupidity of the general public

Seriously, something like 60% of end users never even crack the manual, on anything.

They also don't read the logos on the box or the games' cases. There's a nice 'Blu-ray disc' symbol on every game.

Sony should start to wake up the potential 60%.
Read: 50% of the parents who bought PS3s for their nagging kids don't know that it outputs in HD, is a phenominal Blu-Ray player and can download Internet pr0n.

They shoulda got the kids on the phone.

That probably confuses things. They may think Blu-ray means PS/3 game.
