I traded in the majority of my DVDs to FYE for store credit to get Blus. The only ones I kept were ones they wouldn’t take or a special collection DVD like the Dark Knight one I have. That’s one of the few I have both a separate DVD release and the Blu Ray of.

I keep all dvd's that do not have a blu ray or 4K UHD. I've got about 700 or so. I usually trade in all my dvd's once I have a blu-ray to replace it with. The only time I hold onto my dvd is if there is something that the blu ray doesn't have. Like my La Dolce Vita dvd that contains oodles of documentaries, interviews and special features that the blu ray does not. Or something like Almost Famous, which only has one cut of the movie on blu, while the dvd has both. Or there are times when the blu ray and 4K UHD are so unbelievably shitty that I hold onto my dvd ala Terminator 2.

Yes I too still have the original 20th Anniversary DVD set of all 4 films (I assume this is the one you mean). This was actually my very first DVD purchase back in the year 2000, but I also bought the Quadrilogy set when this came out a few years later. And of course, I also have the blu-ray versions too.....you can probably tell I love the Alien films.

Other than that, I generally keep the DVD's if they offer something different to the blu-rays, as others have already mentioned - alternate cuts, extra material, etc.

The 20th anniversary DVD edition of ALIEN (R1, Canada) was also my very first DVD purchase back in 1999 - a case of history repeating itself - an ex-rental Betamax copy of ALIEN was the very first pre-recorded videotape I ever bought, back in 1985.

ALIEN is a favourite of mine (along with JAWS), and I am looking forward to the 4K edition and making of book by J.W. Rinzler.

I get rid of them unless there is a reason to keep them. For instance, I still have the DVD special feature discs for Star Wars, the theatrical cut of daredevil, etc.

I'll never get rid of the supplemental STAR WARS TRILOGY DVD disc (the old 2004 box set), simply for the 2 1/2hrs documentary and the generous collection of trailers.

^ This. I'll also own a second version of a movie on Blu if it offers a compellingly different selection of extras (like a lot of UK Arrow vs. U.S. Scream Factory or Criterion editions).

I forgot to point out my DVD sets were Region 2 as I'm in the UK.
I bought Alien and Aliens on VHS sometime around the late 80's (can't remember exactly when) which were in pan-and-scan. However, after the third film was released on video (mid-90's), there was also a widescreen set of all 3 films available, which I also bought.

I try not to, for space reasons. I don't really have an attachment to special features and such, so if I'm losing something going to the Blu, I don't really mind. As far as my Blu-ray collection, I have quite a few doubles that I'm thinking of selling (I'm try to figure out how to go about that). I rather just have one copy of a movie (3 MCU doubles and 2 DCEU doubles are the exception).

I'm seriously debating this question. I've still got a ton of DVD's (and LD's for that matter) that have been upgraded by a BR.

At the moment I'm leaning to buying dual-BR packages to effectively store the DVD version of films that I'd want as a backup.

Originally I sold my doubles to the nearby Hastings Bookstore for store credit. They went out of business. Then I sold what I could to Amazon.com. Now Amazon has apparently stopped buying used movies(the few I have found that they will buy anymore are for mere pennies). So they are piling up in a spare bedroom and/or closet. I have thrown some in the trash although that troubles my penny pinching self. I think a trip to the nearby Goodwill store for a donation is in the near future.

I keep a lot of DVDs for various reasons, perhaps the blu-ray has no subtitle track but the DVD does, sometimes audio options are not carried across (5.1 tracks etc), exclusive extras. Hell, even nice packaging - I couldn't part with my Once Upon A Time In The West DVD because I just adore the packaging. It was this foldout digipack with a nice matt finish and fantastic interior and exterior artwork.

The blu-ray packaging was just so vanilla in comparison -

I mostly just sell off my old DVDs (for the tiny amount of money Decluttr will give me) if they don’t have something the Blu doesn’t have. If they have exclusive extras, I try putting them in two or three-packs with the Blus and throw out the DVD packaging. Space is at a serious premium for me, so I have to consolidate.

Like others have said, I usually keep the dvd's that offer the closest presentation that a movie was in theaters.

Like, I still have my WB Matrix dvd from 1999 because it's the only way to watch that movie with the original color palette.

From what I've read, the new 4K and included remastered Blu-ray has the original color timing.

I have three versions of Halloween. Soon to be four with 4K Halloween.

The DVD versions are the ‘25 years of terror’ and the version that included the tv scenes.

I also own the regular vanilla Blu-ray release.

From reading a few reviews, it looks like neither of the two new discs go back to the original color timing =(

People are saying that the UHD disc pulls back a lot of the horrible green coloring but turns a lot of the image teal instead of going back to the original colors, while the remastered bluray turns things blue in color =/

It's nitpicky, but I'll keep my dvd =)

Exclusive extras cause me to keep the DVD.

Blu-Ray.com’s reviews are good in detailing what extras BluRays have, and the old DVD review site DVDTalk has been invaluable in detailing what extras the old DVDs have. If DVDTalk ever goes away it will be much more difficult to determine if a DVD can be safely thrown out.
