Hey all, I just bought a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player and really only have one question.
When I go to buy a Blu-Ray movie is there anywhere on the case that states that the film was shot in 1080p HD? I like alot of old films but it drives me nuts to see some of these older films being put out on Blu-Ray discs when I know they weren't shot in HD. Now I know some of you will say that the old 35mm resolution was much greater than Blu-Rays anway and when they scale it down to put on a Blu-Ray disc it looks great but I would still like to only buy movies that were filmed in HD or buy movies that I know I will be viewing them in full 1080p. Any advice anyone has will be appreciated. |

Try using this link:[http://www.imdb.com. Search for the movie your interested in, then click on the Aspect Ratio. This should tell you what was used to film the movie. Hope that helps you out. Garry Last edited by gem58; 02-14-2009 at 12:48 PM. |

That said definitely pick up Crank if you want to have something shot on a digital camera. Probably one of the best looking blu's I've seen. |

The resolution of most films is still better than HD at this time. Capturing film is like making a photo copy. Restoration is needed for many older (pre-1955 or so) films. Color correction, shrinkage, sound, and more are all part of a total restoration.
Here is a good article on the treatment Sound of Music got in HD when DVD was the only format that could display the film: http://www.dvdreview.com/html/sound_..._special.shtml As for old golden age TV shows shot on film mastered in HD look great on DVD. These types of DVD titles should start seeing a Blu release soon. But when they come to Blu, you will be shocked in the quality. The 50's-60's Twilight Zone was mastered in HD for the DVD market known as The Definitive Edition. It was the first time the original negatives came out of the vault in over 30 years. TZ review: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/doogansviews/063005.html Here is another article about restoration of an older film, Disney's Sleeping Beauty: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...gel121508.html Edit. Here is a good article on the restoration of "The Robe". One of the most important films for us older Blu owners. It started the widescreen era. http://www.lowrydigital.com/therobe.html IHT Last edited by Indian Hills Theater; 02-14-2009 at 02:54 PM. |

Film resolution, most of the time is way better than 1080p. 1080p is still less than 2k masters. 70mm films can be restaured easiler at 4k with is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY higher than 1080p and they usually look killer on Blu-ray. Check the James Bond for example. Altought they did use a little to much DNR on those (because you can see the artifact of that process slightly) , those look awesome of 1970's movies!

I just want to thank everyone for all their advice! Next question: I'd like everyone's opinion on what movie(s) they think take full advantage of all of the technonology the Blu-Ray has to offer and look and sound stunning.

The reason Baraka looks so good: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baraka_(film)
The movie was filmed at 152 locations of 24 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Nepal, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States. It contains no dialogue. Instead of a story or plot, the film uses themes to present new perspectives and evoke emotion purely through cinema. The film was the first in over twenty years to be photographed in the 70mm Todd-AO format. How the West Was Won was shot in CINERAMA. That means 3 cameras wide at 30 frames per second. In other words it looks awesome too. The second disk is in the SMILEBOX format. It does a good job of replicating the Cinerama deep curved screen effect. Disney's Sleeping Beauty and 2001.https://forum.blu-ray.com/images/icons/icon14.gif If you like computer animation, Kung Fu Panda is at least a rental. More recent films would include The Dark Night (My wife Marta hates the movie), Predator, 2001, Night at the Museum, I Robot, Iron Man, and The Golden compass. These are all in our collection except Predator or Baraka. We rented both through Netflix. We also rented several others before buying. I have only seen a limited number of Blu's but so far i would say the best one is Iron Man, by far! Just the beginning of it was amazing enough to love it.
I have seen 3:10 to Yuma and liked its audio too, and the 7.1 is nice (rather than Iron Man's 5.1) ![]() I was just watching Band of Brothers only on DVD last night, but even that had such amazing sound. I am really excited to see it on BD now! I think I am going to be buying I, Robot and Transformers this weekend and trying them out ![]() |

I like the Pirates of the Carribean Films. Also the animation films are off the hook. Chicken Little, Nightmare before Christmas, etc. Nice to watch for the clarity. OK I get a kick out of cartoons.
