writesimply - our eyes aren't noisy per say. it really amounts to the activation of a different form of receptor in our eyes (rods vs cones) that changes our vision. noisiness in the eye, as you say can be attributed to a number of different factors but it really depends upon activation in the eye itself which is dependant upon the light available.

You think so? I've seen Collateral on HBO-HD and it looked fantastic. I believe Michael Mann used the same cameras for both films, didn't he? It is possible that he set them up differently though. |

He never said he viewed the Blu-ray disc on that same display. Plus, the other reviewer said that he saw this title at the movies and it looked just like the Blu-ray title. IMO, a Blu-ray disc can not be better than the theatrical version or the source. That just sounds like crazy talk to me. |

I really have to wonder what some of these people are watching and watching on. Click looked amazing. Not filmlike amazing, but otherwise drop dead gorgeous. There are some bizarre politics going on over codecs. We're talking far right vs. far left, with two sides being diametrically opposed. The HD-DVD people pretty much have one codec, VC1, and are looking to monopolize it. They also have less studios giving them alternatives. VC1 is probably the most efficient and if I had a preference for all titles that would be the codec I would choose. Given, my brief experience with Blu-ray now, MPEG to and AVC can look just as good. There is no problem with the format. Prices should come down a bit, but there are plenty of deals to be found online.

To me the most important thing that you said in your post is there is no problem with the format. What many people continually fail to realize is that any deficiencies in PQ from BD compared to HD-DVD has much more to do with the mastering than anything else at this point. In other words, if some of these Sony titles were put on HD-DVD, there would still be the same complaints regarding PQ. Sony is simply not doing a very good job on mastering some of their titles, and this would show up regardless of the format that it is put on. The arguments re PQ should be more about studio vs studio than it should be about HD-DVD vs BD, since there is absolutely no question that both formats can, and do, provide a platform for superb looking HD material. |

Just thought I'd a few comments about this movie.
I was skeptical about this movie after seeing the original review posted by BR.com but, while I agree with certain aspects of the review, this movie was actually not bad. The problem with the movie isn't so much that Adam Sandler is trying to come across as a serious actor because the last half of the movie really showcases that Sandler has the ability to take on more serious 'drama' roles but that the movie suffers miserably from forcing the comedy onto the viewer. The Blu-ray.com review that the comedy of the movie tries too hard and force-feeds the audience really does try to force the laughs onto the viewer and often comes off as being un-funny. I think that if the writing for this script had concentrated mainly on the serious dramatic-side instead of trying to weigh the comedy, side-by-side, with the more serious angle of the movie, it may have succeeded. While it's not one of Sandler's best movies, Click really does show us a glimpse of Adam Sandler's talent to come off as a serious dramatic actor and he really should take up more challenging roles. Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, Robin Williams and even Jim Carey have managed to transition into other genres without compromising their acting talent. While Adam Sandler should continue doing comedy films, he should really start to expand his acting talent so that he's doing more roles that challenge his ability as an actor. All in all, Click isn't a bad movie and I was especially impressed with the PQ and the AQ. Not a bad transition to BLu-ray and all for the $15 that I paid for the two pack that included 50 First Dates and Click. To end this post, I thought the movie was a good play on the issue of morality and the choices that we make while accepting responsibility for them and it's a film that I'll keep in my library. |

All 35mm prints aren't the same. For big runs, the studios can split the run to different labs and they'll sometimes even make different prints for New York, Los Angeles and (sometimes) Chicago than they do for the rest of the country so that the major reviewers and Guild members get to see the film as pretty much intended. And a 35mm print or a BD is almost always better than the source (the camera negative). That's what color timing is all about as well as any other processing. Most films today purposely have a desaturated look. That didn't happen in the camera. That happened in the lab or on the computer when making the digital interpositive. |
