"Overall, I was very happy with this transfer. I saw 'Click' in the theater showing a standard film print -- if it was exhibited digitally anywhere, unfortunately I missed it -- and I remember it boasted quite vivid colors and a very bright, sharp and clean image. However, the film's overall visual aesthetic was also rather clinical and TV movie-esque, so it has a somewhat flat look at times. This 1.85:1, 1080p/MPEG-2 transfer delivers a similar presentation. As there is no "print" to speak of, the source master is predictably pristine. Blacks are absolutely rock solid, and contrast nice and smooth across the entire grayscale. Whites are not overpumped, and unlike some cheaper video formats (such as MiniDV and the like) the darker scenes generally don't lose detail in the shadows.

This Blu-ray release is also considerably superior to the standard DVD release. The image throughout is more detailed and sharp, sometimes noticeably so, and a bit brighter as well. Colors also get a big boost, especially during the second half of the film. The almost shocking hues of the futuristic sets, for example, are so vivid they seem impossibly real, and deliver the kind of color only high-definition is capable of. If nothing else, the next-gen formats prove that for material shot native in HD, standard-def video just does to do them justice."

So, like the end of the 1966 Batman movie, can we say "Success! Success!"?

If this is an indication of what the Blu-ray format can consistently and routinely deliver, the format war is just getting started.

I wish it meant it was actually ending so we could go to the business of watching movies

You gotta just wonder why this guy can't just come out and say wow what a great picture. The review was great but that word was missing, so if all the new bd 50 reviews are like this say good bye hd dvd.

I'm sure that some supporter from that 'other' format will find fault with at least two comments made in the review. You know they will have to do it!!

I was thinking that myself while reading his review.... like he was trying to find fault, but couldn't. It seemed like it was just killing him to recommend it!!! (I dont believe most reviewers care about one format or the other, like Peter, but still????????)

Excellent News! Sony definitely needed to knock this one out of the park and it looks like it did.

I threw it in earlier and watched about 20 mins so far. I think it looks really good, although there is some grain in the indoor scenes. I wasn't really expecting this, but it didn't detract from my viewing experience. I will finish the film later and give some more thoughts on it.

I saw this in a theater and was not impressed with the P/Q overall.

Is this guy to be believed? I have not really seen many posts from him anywhere on that forum.

He seems to think the title looks like crap.

Some reviews say they see noise in the dark scenes. Is this film grain or a problem?

Its digital noise, which when shot with a digital camera, a movie will exhibit. It's analagous to film and its grain.

The noise is there, but doesn't detract from the sharpness of the picture. I throughly enjoyed the movie.

So if technology in the digital cameras improve maybe they can eliminate the noise? Also I take it that the same noise have shown up on HD-DVDs?

Noise (or blocking, compression artifacts) are very affected by the correct setting of video black (which should be 0 light output)

I got a copy of this and popped it in the Samsung (recent firmware) to see what it was like seeing as there have been varying reports.

It is definitely noisy in some shots. I don't think it is compression noise, but either video noise in capture or 'added film grain asthetic'. In any case, it does not look like any compression noise that I am familiar with and appears to be cleanly rendered noise when it is there (ie it does not cause artifacting).

But overall it is not a super great looking film. I remember thinking that when I saw the trailers at the Sony Store BD Demo (Ultraviolet trailer looked a lot better) and being surprised then...

I hope to watch it through this weekend and then I might have a better overall impression.

From what I hear, this is a new type of camera??? Is it possible that it doesnt tranfer to home formats as good or as easy as film?? May be some learning curve on this new stuff... Is Superman Returns the same type of camera? If so, it will be interesting to see the comparison between the two formats...

I have heard conflicting stories about what camera was used.

I don't think that there is anything more difficult moving data to Bluray from film or HD camera but certainly the initial quality is important.

The poster that said that it did not look all that great in the cinema I think has made a key statement.

The noise is there in the 35mm print I saw two months ago. It need not always be bad to have grain/noise. Even our eyes get "noisy" when there's not enough light and we're trying to interpret things in the shadows.

I'm sure that the HD-DVD supporters will react the same (or even more so) when Miami Vice gets released. That film has noise all over the place but the story's all good!
