Default video codecs on PS3

What is the lieklyhood of PS3 supporting WMV, XVID and DIVX video codecs ?

Is it a political sony/microsoft thing about the standards they support, or are there large licencing fees involved ?

how important is it to you for the PS3 to support these codecs ?

cheers

Practically zero chance on all 3 codecs.

WMV is Microsoft, and Sony refuses consistently to use Microsoft products when they can avoid it (notice their conspicuous refusal to use VC-1 encoding on Blu-ray movies).

Xvid and DivX codecs are commonly used to encode pirated digital copies of video content, and that's probably a political statement by Sony, though I personally think they should open things up a bit and at least allow these two.

As for importance, I don't personally care. I use PS3 Video 9 to do conversion to AVC encoding and haven't had any issues serving out the .MP4/AVC files via TVersity (which also has the nice side effect of allowing you to do fast forward/rewind/resume).

Yeah it sucks no xvid or divx. I just use my laptop to play these files to my TV via hdmi. It would be really nice to load them directly off the PS3 though.

And mp3 is highly more pirated than any xvid or divx files and that is supported. Sony should add a player to the OS that plays multiple formats and options... that would not look as bad as simply adding xvid and divx support. If Sony did this it would make the PS3 a viable media player.. it kind of is right now but not fully until it supports these important codecs.

Yea, there's practically no chance in hell that WMV will be supported on the PS3 as it's a Microsoft format. But, I do hope that Divx/Xvid will eventually get supported. I know the vast majority of pirated movies come in those formats, however I think it's only a matter of time before the pirates start jumping on the AVC bandwagon. What would Sony (or even Microsoft, as the 360 supports AVC as well) do when the majority of pirate encodings switch over to AVC?

I contacted Sony about this and they said they were including industry standards (mp4) rather than company owned formats such as the Quicktime .mov, DivX and xviD. Yet, the PS3 has an option for .wma audio playback. I'm a little confused about Sony's response.

That's what I meant instead of wav! I thought that looked wrong before I posted it.
