Default Blu-ray Video Codecs

Ok...I'm just curious to know all the different video codecs, and what the best/worst ones are. Anybody that can help?

I'm still learning too, but I'll hazard a guess and see how I do...

Best = AVC MPEG-4...?

It's whichever is going to be capable of throwing down the highest bitrate...

All the codecs I have seen have been:

VC1 (the Microsoft codec)
MPEG4 (AVC)
MPEG2 (the dvd codec).

MPEG2 -- given a fat bitrate can look good, but can also look not as good as the other two if they don't put time into it.

All three can be equally good. It really depends on master and time and effort taken by the studio in the transfer.

I don't think there is one best codec.

Video codecs supported by Blu-ray players are:
MPEG-2
AVC (a.k.a. MPEG-4)
VC-1
H.264

AVC has proved itself the most consistent in high quality playback. But, now that VC-1 is being given proper bitrates on BD titles, they are looking to be amazingly similar to (and occasionally better than) AVC.

My initial response was going to be "whichever one is giving out the highest bitrate"...

I suppose the reason I went with AVC was simply because from my experience and the BDs I have, the ones that look the best have been the AVC ones -- consistently higher rates than the others.

My friend, MPEG-4 AVC is H.264. Also, this is Newbie Discussion material.
