As the Happinet UHD Blu-ray will probably be derived from the TLE 4K master, this complicates things a bit. However, one thing I will say is that I would wonder why Happinet would not specify their release would be SDR, when HDR (in one form or another) is virtually standard on UHD Blu-ray at this point. I would also wonder what the point of a UHD Blu-ray without HDR would be at this point in 2019, when a 4K remastered Blu-ray would likely be seen as sufficient for SDR material. It certainly seems that HDR is no longer specifically advertised or mentioned on the latest releases in Japan, however. There are exceptions, but for example, I had to go find user reviews to learn that Pony Canyon's recent UHD Blu-ray release of Code Blue: The Movie has HDR, because HDR was not mentioned in any press release or news article, except as it relates to the UHD Blu-ray format. Also, I'm not sure there's been any Japanese domestic UHD Blu-ray released without HDR other than GAGA's The Phantom of the Opera, which was a very early release for the domestic Japanese market. |

Have you read Torsten's comments on hdr and suspiria?
I wonder if it's possible to take TLEs work and add an hdr grade and legally release it? There have been quite a few uhd sdr discs released in the last few years, and it will continue. Le Chat Qui Fume's forthcoming Blood Rose, for example. Last edited by AlexIlDottore; 04-05-2019 at 06:07 AM. |

the only edition of the classic 1977 film that should be on 4K UHD is the Synapse transfer

I can't speak in terms of the transfer, but according to product listing on various Japan sites, there is no English subtitles. Only Japanese.

We're coming full circle.
Happinet will release the film, from the 4K master, on subtitled or Japanese dubbed widescreen VHS on June 4th, 2025. Each version is limited to 500 copies and has a numbered, reversible cover. The subtitled version has English audio, while puzzlingly, the dubbed version will apparently use the 1998 DVD dub, as opposed to a dub from the heyday of VHS. The price is ¥8,580, which is the same price as the single-disc standard 4K UHD edition release from 2019. And remember: Quote:
