Warner Bros Tomb Raider 2 - Starring Alicia Vikander

Source: Deadline

Quote:
MGM & Warner Bros Starts Climb Toward ‘Tomb Raider 2,’ Amy Jump To Write Script
By Mike Fleming Jr

Mike Fleming Jr - April 12, 2019 9:22am

EXCLUSIVE: Get ready for another Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander. MGM and Warner Bros have hired Amy Jump to write the script for the sequel. Sources said Vikander liked what she was in Jump’s scripting.

She is best known for her collaborations with director and partner Ben Wheatley, who co-wrote several of them. That includes Free Fire, the action drama that starred Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy and Armie Hammer. Her other credits include the Wheatley-directed Kill List, A Field In England, Sightseers, and High-Rise. The films are cult favorites in the UK. She broadens the pool of female action writers, who are now in high demand. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons wrote the first installment. Warner Bros released the first film.

Directed by Roar Uthaug, Tomb Raider grossed $274 million worldwide, turning the Oscar-winning Swedish actress Vikander into an action heroine after a string of prestige pics and sci-fi like Ex Machina. Graham King’s GK Films is back as producer after an exhilarating run with Bohemian Rhapsody. Elizabeth Cantillon also is producing.

WME and Independent Talent Group rep Jump.

Dug the first one with Vikander as Lara, so I will welcome a sequel with open arms.

They could squeeze the budget a little bit more and make a sequel a bit more profitable.

First movie was entertaining, if not one I will see over and over again. Would I see a sequel? Sure.

I actually posted about it already in the 2018 thread, but Darth Marcus was wise enough to create a new thread for it.

Needless to say, I'm glad MGM are pursuing a sequel. Question is, is this gonna be a loose adaptation of Rise of the Tomb Raider, or are they gonna go in an entirely different direction?

First one had a fair bit going for it, mainly Vikander, but was not without its flaws. This was looking unlikely so pleased that they're pushing forward. This could be a good franchise with the right people involved; Jump certainly seems like a positive step.

Based on the end of the first film, it looks like they'll be leaning into the iconic look a bit more this time around. That might help get a few more bums in seats. If WB take this franchise seriously I think a really good film could be delivered that stands out from the other big franchise films. They certainly have a great star. There's a lot of potential here.

MGM is desperate for properties now that they’re back to distributing on their own, so I kinda see why they want a sequel simply to have a franchise. Enjoyed the first, so I wouldn’t mind a sequel, but the chances of this doing well financially seem slim especially given how mediocre the first film performed. That being said, this is only in the scripting stages, so it might not even come together at all. Should be interesting to follow.

Let’s not forget Jolie’s sequel The Crade of Life tanked domestically.

The same could repeat here.

I wonder if this second one will be sticking to the story in the Rise of the Tomb Raider game. Kind of like how the first one was pretty much the first tomb raider. Yes it had changed from the game but it was close enough. I’m looking forward to this sequel. Talking about the new Tomb raider PS4 games
