Reminds me why I stopped playing Magic and why I never got into MMOs or most forms of competitive online games: It turns into Moneyball.

P2W items should be banned. Why should people suffer because someone else is silly enough to drop real money on items to increase their chances.

Loot boxes with cosmetics only should remain....I enjoy opening a loot box now and then

Personally I think this whole thing is stupid. If people were just smart enough to not spend money on stupid things then these companies wouldn't keep making P2W games or crappy loot boxes. I avoid both of those things and don't need the government making a law to "protect me".

Makes me think back to prohibition...
Government: Alcohol is bad. Lets ban it.
People: I'm still going to drink.
Government: Lets arrest people for drinking alcohol.
People: I'm still going to drink.
Government: Lets poison the alcohol - that'll teach'em!
People: I'm still going to drink!
Government: Well crap if we kill everyone we won't have anyone left to tax! Okay fine! We will allow alcohol again!

These companies are not forcing you to buy their product. The government doesn't need to be involved. People should just stop being stupid by giving money to bad companies.

I've seen this get pretty widespread, but there's one big piece of information being left out. It's not banning loot boxes entirely, it's banning loot boxes in games for those under 18. Senator Hawley's release

Quote:
Games targeted at those under the age of 18.

This would be determined by subject matter, visual content, and other indicators similar to those used to determine applicability of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)

Games with wider audiences whose developers knowingly allow minor players to engage in microtransactions

Tell me about it, Magic is incredibly fun, but such a money pit with 3-4 new sets every 2 years. And of course they feel the need to power-creep cards to force you to stay updated. No more tournaments for me anymore, just play with friends.

In the United States that's the vast majority of games. Anything with loot boxes would have to be rated AO (Adults Only) and most stores won't even carry those games.

I’m not as active a gamer as I once was. So forgive my ignorance. In my last trip to GameStop I couldn’t help but hear a mom and dad screaming at the GS employee to give them a refund for their kid playing games. The kid played fortnight and pubg from the convo. They wanted to know what he had bought for around 1000$ according to the parents. I actually felt bad for the employee who was trying to explain that he didn’t sell them the stuff. It was digital content on x1. To contact them.
Is that P2W content or loot boxes? I’m unfamiliar with it.

Europe presented a law back when Battlefront was the scapegoat as they called the boxes a gamble. There were some good articles on that a bit ago.

All it will do is drive up the sticker price on games. 79.99 games incoming.

Yes, but still a good thing to note.
