Default Onkyo thoughts- loyalties?

I have read that Onkyo is coming out with a high-priced HD-DVD player to rival the Denon model. What my question is: How many of you BD supporters will pass on future Onkyo purchases, or maybe even contemplate getting rid of your Onkyo components due to it's support for HD-DVD?

I really don't care what format Onkyo supports. I will continue to buy their products no matter what. Can't believe some of the threats and questions in this forum...

Isn't this Onkyo player just a rebadged Toshiba w/ a few tweaks? It's clear they've signed some sort of deal to lend their "name" to the HD DVD format. I don't think it's a big deal, it's just business. They'll be on the blu side of the house soon enough.

Onkyo makes quality products, and I will not let their support of HD-DVD be a factor in purchasing one of their fine receivers.

However, I find it humorous that one of the "benefits" of HD-DVD is its low cost yet they are allowing a premium priced player on the market. Granted the specs seem to be better then the other players available from Toshiba, but if it costs $900 to get a quality HD-DVD player why not just buy a top of the line Blu-ray player for about half that and spend the rest on some great movies.

I agree...I have been a loyal Onkyo supporter since the 1990's when I bought my first THX receiver the 828 at age 18. As long as they keep churning out good quality stuff I will continue to support and purchase their equipment. Just because they want to try to make a profit in another sector is fine by me. That's what companies try to do is to maximize profits, and if it is at the behest of stupid HD-DVD supporters than that is fine by me!

For the record Onkyo has said publicly they support both formats and are members of the BDA. They more than likely will have a combo player or BD player out soon enough. For now they are going to sell a modified Toshiba X2 so they aren't spending any R&D cash on HD DVD. The marketing on their new receiver line touts HDMI 1.3 connectivity to "Blu-ray and HD DVD".

They have well built, user friendly, feature rich receivers at reasonable prices. Support them and let them know you're Blu.

i personally find the idea of boycotting a company because of their support for HD DVD to be juvenile and kind of stupid... especially when in onkyo's case, all indications are that they'll have a BD or combo player out on the market soon enough anyway.

granted, i don't buy uni DVDs right now, but that's more because i'm waiting to see if they go blu in the next year or two than because i'm boycotting them. i'm not about to rebuy movies if i can at all help it.

i'm pondering an onkyo 605 or 805 right now, and their impending HD DVD player is definitely not removing those receivers from consideration.

Actually I was considering them for my next receiver purchase, but they are off my list. I don't care if they are just lending their name to a rebadged player, the action alone of supporting a mediocre technology speaks volumes about their commitment to quality in their own products. There are plenty of other receiver brands out there anyways.
