Ordinary People is a fantastic film. It highlights the problem with the Oscars, though, in that it gets beat about the head and insulted because it happened to win more votes than a violent Hard-R rated character study of an unlikable boxer. The Oscars state they exist to celebrate the American film industry, and yet they breed hate and dissension. I am sick to death of the arguments the Oscars cause...Dances With Wolves vs. GoodFellas, Ordinary People vs. Raging Bull, Rocky vs. Taxi Driver, L.A. Confidential vs. Titanic, Pulp Fiction vs. Forrest Gump, and on and on it goes. No one seems to be able to say, they were all great movies, I would have voted for "x" and let it go, they instead launch vitriolic attacks on the winning film, as if the winning film was little more than a bucket of rotting fish intestines.

Not even original. He see the countless other similar threads posted by several "pollsters" around here, and decides to join the bandwagon. It's getting kind of old.

I almost started a thread on Friday titled "Vote for your favarorite 'favorite' thread", and was going to list the dozen or so 'favorite' threads floating around that day. In the end, I decided not to as I'm sure several "pollsters" would have taken offense.

The Elephant Man is the underrated gem here. Raging Bull has gotten overrated at this point. De Niro is awesome but the movie itself is only okay.

sorry but I hated RAGING BULL-- 2 hours with a bunch of crude,
foul mouthed lowlifes that had no appeal at all to me--

ORDINARY PEOPLE was a great movie and I agree with its win...

duanerichard45, I think it would've been better to make one large thread titled "Oscars - Best Film Nominees/Winners" and list them by year.

Raging Bull should've ran away with it. At least De Niro received the best actor award.
