Default Am I the only one who thinks Popeye (1980) deserves superior picture and sound?

One of the great all-time musicals (Up there with Fiddler on the Roof, I dare say!) and Robert Altman's last decent picture.
It's hard to find a widescreen DVD of the movie, as it is. It's hard to find a full screen copy that isn't edited for language (musicals are somehow automatically children's pictures, now. Thanks Marry Poppins/Disney). So why not put a little effort forward to get this thing pressed? The only decent master of the movie was done for laserdisc. I don't want laserdisc! It'd get lost in the mix with all of my vinyl records!

Couldn't agree more. Robert Altman's films need a presence on Blu-Ray.

And I'm all for more Shelley Duvall in high definition.

Default Robert Altman's "Popeye" coming?

I am a HUGE fan of this film, and while doing a search for stuff online just found this:

http://www.blurayday.com/76867/popey...ember-1980-usa

I have no idea what the heck to make of this, but I continued to search and couldn't find anything else anywhere about it. Anyone have an idea?

Holy crap! The fact that it's written like that on this site means that it's coming out on blu ray? I'm very happy that Popeye is coming out, but even more excited because it would mean that THE GREATEST MOVIE OF THEM ALL is about to be released:

http://www.blurayday.com/tag/vampires-kiss

EDIT: After a closer look, this looks to be just some random blog site without any credible sources. Bummer.

That's one weird, random site. I can't see what the purpose of it is.

Sadly, the fact that it lists a DR WHO story (FRONTIOS) and an old UK TV series, CROWN COURT, as Blu-ray - neither of which is at all likely - means that the POPEYE listing is most probably bull.

It is bull. Looks like one of those cheap download sites designed to get as many hits as possible.

Yeah probably - but it's a weird way of attracting hits. Surely listing IRON MAN 3 is going to get you more traffic than CROWN COURT?

Anyway, it's a shame: I'd love to see POPEYE on Blu; a deeply odd film but one I have great nostalgia for.

We'll probably see it next year since the Sony CGI film will be released that year (also that same the long-awaited Famous Studios Popeye shorts!).

Whilst its not brilliant, I do have a soft spot for this film.
I'd welcome a blu-ray release as I think it would reveal a film much improved by clarity and definition.
Rather like Scream Factory's Halloween III release which really made me see that film in a new light (no pun intended).

This film was released in five theatres in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles in 4-track mag "Vistasonic" sound. IIRC, this was Paramount's attempt to come up with a sound system in competition with Dolby. I don't think any other film was made in this format. I don't remember what Vistasonic added to vanilla 4-track mag, but it did sound good.

I think I saw it at the old Beekman theatre in NYC. If the original mag tracks still exist and aren't damaged, a BD release, if there ever is one, could be great.

I remember liking this movie when I saw it, but I also saw a bit of it relatively recently on TV and was somewhat bored by it, although I thought the sets and costuming were terrific.

Trivia: Klaus Voorman (who designed the Beatles' Revolver cover and who was a sometimes member of the Plastic Ono Band) is in the movie as is songwriter Van Dyke Parks.

I love this old film...mostly the songs and music by the late Harry Nillson.

ON EDIT
I forgot I DVR'd this in HD when it aired on HBO last year. Actually looks really good via the HD stream.

This is a great film with a pretty impressive cast. In my opinion it is one of the best cartoon adaptions to live action.

I noticed when i was at best buy yesterday, that they have WB reissue of the movie now.
Really hoping that now that WB has the rights to this in their recent agrement with Paramount, that means we will see a bluray release at some point in the coming year.

Definitely. It's one of the more esoteric Studio films ever made. Sure, it has its problems, but it's impossible for me not to get swept up in its goofy charm. I actually just sold off my DVD because the film deserves to be seen in High Definition.

I’m watching this movie right now. I have the 1080p iTunes version downloaded, but I would kill to get this on blu. I was obsessed with this movie in the early 80’s when HBO would play it all the time, and it’s been a favorite of mine ever since. I’m not a fan of musicals, but this one just totally works. How this has never been released on blu is mind blowing!!!
