Denon 1909 Question

Just purchased this beast yesterday and have one question. I have it hooked to my projector via component hook up. And I wanted to hook up my direct tv and ps3 via hdmi. (Waiting to get a projector with HDMI for now) My current projector is 720p but no hdmi hook up. When i hooked up the direct tv via hdmi ...there was sound but no picture. My question is do I need to have my "monitor" hooked up via hdmi as well to see a picture? If so I guess i will have to purchase a new projector. I have it hooked up with component cables right now and it works but I really wanted to hook up my ps3 and direct tv with hdmi

Most Denon AVR manuals have a video conversion table which will answer your question.

But, yes, it is likely true that the Denon will not convert an HDMI input to a component output. That would defeat the copy protection feature of HDMI.

Have a look at page 9 of the owner's manual, also available online at http://www.usa.denon.com/AVR-1909-OM_E_004.pdf from Denon. HDMI video will only be output through the HDMI output. Page 12 also confirms this in writing.

"When the AVR-1909 and Blu-ray Disc Player / DVD player are connected using and HDMI cable, also connect the AVR-1909 and monitor using an HDMI cable."

Thanks for the help.....I was guessing that would be the answer. Oh well time to save up for a 1080p projector

you can connect your PS3 with Component for Video, and HDMI for Audio. (adjust settings in the PS3)

and connect your Directv with component. Also use an Optical cable for audio.


Then just run component video from the receiver to the projector.

I was going to reccomend that, but couldn't confirm via the manual if the receiver would accept HDMI audio with component video. My receiver, for example, will not, and this manual didn't seem to allow it. But, without the OSD, I couldn't be sure.
