on another note as well, there is a deal going on right now (see thread) that best buy is giving you a $50 dollar giftcard and guitar hero 3 for free with the purchase of a 80gb ps3. so essentially, ill be getting 80gb ps3, another DS controller since i already have one and GH3, all for $100. thats not a deal?!
Instead of trying to justify your decision, just do it because you've already learned there is no reason to upgrade. Just as there isn't particularly a reason TO upgrade, besides wanting to help your friend out. But don't fool yourself into thinking that you're somehow upgrading anything but the HDD, because everything else is exactly the same beside the extra DS3.

But no, it's not a "deal" to spend more money then it would be to just keep what you have for a slightly different model, especially when much cheaper alternatives are available. But if it comes down to that you just want to help a friend out by losing out on a couple bucks because he can't afford to buy a new PS3, then go for it.

Its an upgrade, no matter how slight of an upgrade it is. Others wanted him to upgrade his harddrive, and thats what he is doing in a round about way, and helping a friend at the same time, for those that don't understand, I have to assume you don't have any real life friends. Oh and I am sure he appreciates you explaning his situation to him.

If it was just the simple matter of helping a friend out because he couldn't afford to buy a PS3, then alright. But that's not entirely what he was asking, based on the initial post. I would've been concerned if someone DIDN'T present the alternative of just personally upgrading his own console, especially after not mentioning in the first post that his friend was looking to purchase a PS3 but didn't want to spend the full amount on one.

Since this isn't the case, and it's now him just wanting to help a friend out, then it's a different situation. If he feels he really wants to help his friend out, then more power to him. But to put a dollar amount to a 40GB upgrade, with a $50 Best Buy giftcard, a Guitar Hero 3 bundle, makes it sound like he needs justification for the upgrade.

Yeah, if it was a case of "I'm helping out my best mate, which PS3 should I buy to replace mine?" sure, no problem...

i dont know if you guys can read or not...

the first post, i will admit was a little vague which is why i already admitted it and explained the whole story, but people are still trying to say what im trying to do is a waste of money. please go back and read the first post and try to understand. i never once asked "should i get a new ps3". matter of fact the first words are "i have decided". let me translate that in dumb... its a done deal. i didnt need any consultation on whether or not to do it. all i asked is if there were any known problems with the 80 that the 40 doesnt have to save myself from upgrading to a worse machine and also what i need to do to prepare. hopefully you guys can understand that...

let me see if i understand. you dont think that is a deal, but you think i should go upgrade the hard drive for no reason, not help my friend and just have the same old system? i just want a new one. i never said there was a good reason for it. i just want a new ps3. why is it such a big deal to you guys?

if you're going to get offended...

1) Don't ask for opinions.
2) Do what you want because ultimately we don't care...

We gave you our opinion based on your VAGUE post then you come back and tell us we need to learn to read because you MEANT what you said 123412534 posts AFTER the OP.

GET CLEAR! If you want to buy the ps3 and give your pal your old one go for it. If you want us to convince you it's a good idea you're in the wrong boards. I love my brothers and friends... but I don't throw PS3's at them all the time.

dude, you are officially a moron! you guys arent even addressing the question i asked! let me say it once again! i never asked for your opinions. i asked what i should do to get ready for the transition. you came into this thread AFTER i had already cleared up the confusion, so what was your excuse?

i feel sorry for new people that come to these boards with questions. at least i have been here long enough to know that not everyone on here is like you...

If you are going to sell the 40 gig. I would only get the 60 gig. It is 100% backwards compatible. I don't know if that means anything to you, but the 60gig was the only choice for me.

80 gig is software emulation...not the actual ps2 chip, like the 60 gig

They are discontinued...so you would have to get it on ebay.

it is a win/win situation for me and my buddy. im getting more money than i would for any trade in credit and he is getting it cheaper than he would at any store. is it that hard for you to understand?

im done wasting my time with this. i know i have to deactivate my account and just know the password for the account on the new one. that is what i ultimately wanted to know, so thanks to everyone who helped me!

You clearly don't understand I don't think any amount of explanation is going to help you comprehend that people WERE trying to help you. For some reason you became extremely defensive and have now downgraded to simply insulting people.

no, i fully understand that people were trying to help me. and i didnt become defensive until this guy comes in here trying to tell me what i was doing is a WASTE. thats why i didnt address you. i dont think any amount of explanation is going to make you see that you guys werent answering the initial question and therefore werent helping the thread in any way. it isnt just me... is hedchekr wrong too?

i just dont see where you guys are coming from? i never once asked for an alternative to upgrade my HDD space. all i wanted to know was how to transfer my psn info...

Yea...i really hate most new generation video games these days...

I only own 4 playstation 3 games. MGS4, Little Big Planet, GTA4 and Lair (the guy who i bought the ps3 from left Lair in the console when he shipped it LOL) I stopped playing it in 30 min.

Most games these days are just proof that businessmen, not nerds control the video game industry and that most companies are just trying to make a buck instead of making a great game.

Just because a system can produce awesome graphics doesnt mean they should forget about plot and gameplay...

I hope RE5 proves me wrong. I was impressed with Little Big planet and MGS4. I thought GTA4 was OK...not even close to a "10" in my book.

I love a lot of the playstation network downloads. Those no name mini games have been my fix for some time now. If i run out of those i go back to oldies. Chrono Trigger, Ocarina of time, ect. They never get old.

I play so many old games. All the way back to NES. I need BC. lol

I found my 60gb used on Ebay for 315 shipped. You can find them if you keep an eye out.

Yea....its tricky. I refuse to buy used speakers. And things like that....

But Amps, video displays...ect I go for.

You need to be careful though, there is a ton of fraud.

But you can also find great deals. Especially because a lot of people don't know what they have or get into trouble with debt and need to sell quickly.

I love buying electronics on ebay, you can get incredible prices if you are patient.

either:

Code:
1.) a-buy a 40GB PS3:$299
     b-buy a 320GB HD:$70
     c-buy a DS3: $40
      -----------------------
          $410 total

2.) Wait for a price-drop and then do 1.

I don't know. I think he had pretty good reason to become defensive. He was getting quite a few replies with people treating him like he's got a screw loose for doing this deal with his friend.

I think it was a good thing for people to point out that there is a less expensive upgrade path in case he didn't know that. But that also seemed to come along with an attitude which roasted him for not going that path.

He's been treated like he's a fool for valuing his friend more highly than saving a few bucks. It's like he's committed some sort of sin by intentionally not taking the best deal so that his friend could get a great deal instead.

I guess it all depends on how much you value friend equity.

yes, sell your buddy your current 40GB...just get another 40GB..
