Default Ps3

I have a Ps3 for almost a year now, but no games except for Fifa08, which I never loaded. I have about 222 Blu-ray titles till now and I have only my Ps3. It's a fantastic Blu ray player! I am from Malta (Europe).

the s300 seams to always have problems with blu-rays. take a look around on the forum for loading problems etc. it always seems to be that player.

I have had my PS3 since January 08 and I have 108 Blu-ray titles. Zero PS3 games although I do rent from Gamefly!

the answers you are getting are from back in the day when standalone blu-ray players cost the same or more than the PS3 since sony subsidized or lost money on selling these as they make money back ont eh games they sell over the long run. The PS3 actually gave you more features and cost less than the stand alones.

Question you need to ask now since the standalones are getting cheaper are do you ever plan on possibly playing games on the system in the future, playing music or video on the ps3, surfing the internet, using the ps3 as a HD dvr or HD tv tuner (in the future). If none of this applies then you may be willing to save a few bucks and go standalone. Another point is the ps3 seems to get firmware updates quicker to make them more compatible with newer blu-rays and the ps3 tends to load the blu-ray quicker. Altho i am sure alot of this will change sometime in the future as well as the standalones are improving their load times with blu-rays.

Well the PS3 is still excellent for the price. You get a top of the line Blu-ray players, that includes BD-Live (aka profile 2.0), is future proof with its many upgrades via internet, has a hard drive, plays and upsamples DVDs, and of course supports games too.
However, the price is one issue, as well as the multi-tasking that makes it something not everyone will want. Many want a dedicated player, or a cheaper player despite the advantages.
If you are looking into getting Blu-ray, look at the deals that are going to hit stores on Black Friday! Black friday sales will show us near $100 Blu-ray players, while the PS3 will still be where it is now. So if price is a concern and web content/picture-in-picture is not, get these cheaper stand alone players.
But yes, the PS3 is an excellent Blu-ray players, and I know several people who have one and do not even own any games.

i have a BDP-300 and it sucks as a blu ray player, sure you get the HD out of it but it takes forever and a day just to start up then an extra 2 or 3 mins just to load the movie, sure it gives you time to get popcorn or what have you. The ps3 is far better in everyway if you ask me.

I picked one up for my parents who are in their Sixties. It's easy to use and works great for just blu raying. On the plus side it's a great grand kid magnet.

Actually, I don't think it is anymore. Standalone players are much less expensive than when the PS3 came out. At $599, when it came out, the cheapest BD player was almost $1000. Now, the PS3 is $299 I think for the old 40gb and $399 for the 80gb; where as you could have bought a fully functional 2.0 profile Samsung 1500 w/Matrix last week for a hair over $200. I just think the PS3 as a player will lose its luster now that stand alones have come down in price. And, speaking from a person that owns a PS3, it looks terrible in your HT rack, as opposed to a stand alone. My .02 cents..

Depends on what type of audio system, if any, you have. As far as picture and load times, yeah it is great and you can also opt later on to expand its use by actually using the PS3 as a gaming consule as well. However, if audio is important to you and your system is dated like mine (non-hdmi receiver) the need arises for analog outs which is critical to optimize the BR Player for both video and audio alike.

So as I said, it depends............
