Cmon, it’s a fairly unanimous feeling about The Motion Picture and it’s lollygag pacing. It’s boring. It tries to be 2001-ish in some parts but it fails miserably. It’s perfect for insomnia though....

Something that has always bugged me about the Directors Edition of TMP was this: Ron Thornton of Foundation Imaging, who did the new visual effects for the film, stated that 'they matched the film resolution and even the grain structure on the film' and that Paramount executives had the finished film screened for them because they were considering releasing the movie in cinema's in limited release.

That means an actual print of the DE actually exists, or did some cretinous Exec lose it somewhere?

This is always tough for me. I'll note that I'm not trying to rank these from an objective "best to worst", but more favorite to least favorite.

3. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
4. Star Trek: First Contact
5. Star Trek: Into Darkness
6. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

I seem to remember that screening (which had the 8' 4" Enterprise model present) wasn't a film print, but just a projected version of the DVD.

I respect Thorton's work on B-5 and elsewhere, but the claims by SharpLine about how they had Foundation work done in 70s style are just really shake your head in disbelief type remarks. The stuff about doing the animation on 2s because that is how they did it in the 70s would be true if you weren't talking about big films like this one -- where they most definitely did not animate on 2s (something that is obvious looking at the film but also confirmed in the near-definitive RETURN TO TOMORROW, which is a huge book released a few years back consisting entirely of interviews from 1979 and 1980, before revisionism and memory issues would start to hold sway.)

The Foundation work when the hex bridge forms in the added stuff near the end does look like it was animated on 2s but as a result doesn't match the look of the theatrical version. There is some double- and triple-printed stuff -- model elements of planets -- that stutter badly in the film during the Spock spacewalk, but I think that was probably trying to stretch film out to cover the score or cutting rhythms; I can't imagine it was artistically motivated.

I also think the added Enterprise shots could have matched film resolution much better if they had just animated still cutouts -- there were large format stills by Virgil Mirano done in 79 that you could have blown up for animation and just had to add the running lights, and they'd've worked better than the CG model IMO, as the new shots have very little perspective change in them. The still cutout effect, when done properly, looks pretty damned good in SILENT RUNNING, 2001, MOONRAKER and more than a few other flicks.

Kind of an interesting franchise where the good films are incredible classics but the bad ones are nigh unwatchable poop. I can't remember part 6 anymore and I'd have to reassess part 5 but I doubt I'd like it much more. I'm higher on the search for spock than most, I just think its really fun and Christopher Lloyd is a great Klingon. Leaving the newer 3 unranked, they just don't feel like star trek to me.

1. First Contact
2. Wrath
3. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
4. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
5. Star Trek: Generations
6. Star Trek: Insurrection
7. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
8. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
9. Star Trek: Nemesis
