Default Blu-ray Disc thickness and durability?

so what exactly is the advantage of the thick disc layer offered by Blu-Ray? i thought it was scratch proof or fingerprint resistant in playback but i keep hearing otherwise??? so its just as susceptible to damage as a dvd? for some reason (and maybe it was that dude on youtube who used a hammer and fire to kill his discs in order to prove how durable they are) i thought they were above reproach in durability? whats the deal? (misadvertised?)

the thickness of CD, DVD, BD nd HD DVD is the same

CD has the information on one side of the disk (just under the label), DVD and HD DVD in the middle, BD at the other side (actually at a .1mm depth)

BDs have a scratch resistance coating added on to it during manufacturing (part of the .1mm over the data). It makes them much tougher to scratches then DVD.

awesome. thanks. then my question is this: why are so many people reporting problems with their blu-ray discs they're renting from blockbuster? maybe its a concentrated amount and whats being reported is overblown because only negative comments come to the surface and therefore become the center of attention. i've just been hearing a lot about that lately and thought it was less likely to scratch a blu-ray than the other competing formats?

It seems to me the the BD is more sensitive than a dvd when it comes to fingerprints or debri. I clean every rental disc with eyeglass cleaner & eyeglass wipes. I really haven't got one with significant scratches yet, mostly just dirty discs or a couple with small cracks on the very outer edge. (1 played, 1 didn't)

So many people aren't reporting problems with Blu-ray rentals from Netflix. If you ask the HD DVD supporters at AVS, they will say their is a bunch of problems, but of course, they don't rent Blu-ray discs, so how would they know? The coating works.

well, the reason behind the hard coating was that the blu-ray laser is much more precise and fine tuned to read the data off the tippy top of the disc than hd dvd or dvd. so the slightest scratch and the disc is done. so to ensure that the discs would work and be durable the coating was added, however fingerprints, dust, anything that could hinder that laser reading the disc is going to screw it up. as long as the disc itself hasn't been hurt just wipe it off with something soft and put it in and it should be fine. ive yet to not be able to solve a playback problem with this.

I took apart a demo disc. I peeled the protective layer off, it's pretty thick. Hard as a rock too.

What I saw was a think plastic platter. I guess it wasn't the protective layer, but it might have somthing to do with it.

No, There are two reasons for the HC both because of the depth of the data layer more then anything else.

1) BD data is at .1mm depth, that means any scratch that is deeper then .1mm will actually destroy the data layer.

2) anything like finger prints or scratches will change the shape of the light, the deeper the information the more the "shadow" can be corrected. Because of the depth BD is a bit more prone to this.

At some point the BDA wanted to make a fingerprint proof coating mandatory but then decided the cost would be too much (but some of the HCs like Durabis have finger print protection). Like you said a simple wipe will clean them off and the HC protects to make sure the wipe won't cause mini scratches.

no idea what it was. Was it around 1/2 the thickness? I always guessed that the BDs (even though they don't need it) were fabricated a lot like DVD with two .6mm disks glued together only in tis case one was a blank and the other was a 1/2 thick BD

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that the vast majority of blockbuster customers have a belt sander that they place the discs on when not in use

This should help
