Angry Wow, the Blu-ray movie selection (and quality) DOES suck

My Sony BDP-S300 (2nd gen) player came yesterday. So, I spend last night watching samples of my regular dvd's on it, including Monster House. However, the component 1080i output doesn't upsample the output - only HDMI. Fortuantely, my Sony TV supposedly does this automatically. However the movies still looked great.

So tonight I stop at Circuit City on the way home and litterally check EVERY BLU-RAY TITLE on the shelves for something I would buy other than Ghost Rider which is coming in the mail. Saw "The Fifth Element" but was afraid it might not be the remastered version, so I skip that. (How do I know which version it is?) After searching and searching and holding off the FEW titles I wanted, I walk away with Monster House, which was at the top of my list.

I watch it, and I am still not sure I was watching HD, or just the somewhat improved version of the regular dvd, which I also have.

My question is, is it me, or is Sony playing this game with us to see if we notice if the movies we buy are high def or not. If not, why am I paying 50 to 100 percent more for a movie which is no better than regular DVD on my High Def TV? Can you say, "Class Action Law Suit"?

Why all these 2nd and 3rd rate titles coming out first? I want high def remastered versions of my favorite popular old movies. Not high def versions of sucky titles like "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" Where is "Lawn Mower Man". "Logan's Run", "Tron", "Metropolis", "Forbidden Planet", and original "The War of the Worlds"? How about "Robocop", "Back to the Future" or "War Games"?

If this is the future of blu-ray titles, maybe I'll pass on re-buying many of my favorite titles like the Terminator series, if I am not getting true high defintion and sound. Upsampling is a moderate improvement at best.

If you have a Blu-ray player and you want upscaling, why don't you have an HDMI cable? You can get a good one in the PS3 accessory section of most major retailers for $20-$30. And, to answer your question about 'Back To The Future', it's a Universal Studios title and therefore will only be available on HD-DED. But, the problem with your experience with picture quality probably lies in the fact that you aren't using an HDMI cable. Although, up until recently, catalogue titles have been poor transfers, they still usually look better than their DVD counterparts. However, they have been improving that scenario. Take a look at 'G.I. Jane', 'Behind Enemy Lines', 'Entrapment', 'Resevoir Dogs', and 'Terminator 2' on Blu-ray. Those films look substantially better on Blu considering their production ages.

This question about Fifth Element kills me . . . if you're standing there looking at it, the RMSTRD in HUGE BLOCK LETTERS on the spine sticker should really give it away.

Maybe your settings are jacked? Maybe your TV sucks? Maybe you're just dumb? Who knows. Most likely it's an id10t issue though . . .

It has alot to do with your TV, I didn't catch your TV model number. You said it was a Sony but that's all I got. If you're not using an HDTV you're not going to get an HD picture. Blu Ray is pointless for people who don't use an HDTV support TV IMO. I mean I would never spend the money for all of this if I didn't have an HDTV. Are you using a standard Tube TV?

Complaining about selection, but you went to Circuit City? Have they ever had good selection of anything?

Monster house looks extremely good. If yours looks like a dVD then there is an issue with something else.

Haha, that's a REALLY old one.

+1 on Circuit City selection. Not the most accurate tool for measuring Blu-ray selection. Go look through Amazon and then complain about selection. Or, look at HD DVD, and REALLY complain about selection.
