Uhh, I thought 4 was delayed because the actors wanted better pay which then made it difficult to make as schedules started filling up and it’s pretty much been shelved as CBS juggles with their current explosion of TV Trek and Paramount the Tarantino movie.

You are right. Although I'm sure Beyond under performing is a factor as well.

I like the first and last, though I could never love them as much as the original films. ST09 is probably the best of the two.
Into Darkness though, it's got some nice moments like the final on-screen appearance of Nimoy but urgh, what were they thinking? It's a not very well done spoof of Star Trek 2. The subplots make it bearable. |

'09 is far and away the best, Into Darkness is dumb fun, and Beyond is kinda bland IMO but has its moments. I would've liked the series to continue but I'm not losing any sleep over its apparent cancellation.

That's my least favorite of the three. You've got everyone chewing the scenery to death (Weller especially) and the whole "John Harrison" thing was beyond stupid. Tribbles, superman blood, etc. I thought it was a mess, but an enjoyable one.

What is the packaging like? I thought it looked almost like a digipack at first but looking again it appears more like separate Blu-ray and 4K packs with a slipcover.

I thought it was well-known that Beyond would've probably done fine had they not sank so much money into the aborted Orci version. If the final budget was closer to $100M than what it ended up being ($185M), a $343M WW gross would've been OK. Not great (especially in today's tentpole economy), but adequate enough to at least break even theatrically and turn a profit on video/streaming/merchandising/etc.
The other problem is that Beyond just wasn't that great, and did nothing to leave an impression on audiences. Paramount bungled their shot at really playing up the 50th anniversary angle (look at how well Bond did it for Skyfall), the Anton Yelchin tragedy and Leonard Nimoy's passing cast a bit of a pall over everything, and the biggest problem IMO is that they marketed a movie starring Idris Elba but caked him in makeup for 90% of his screentime. (Not to mention the entire third act is jacked straight out of Sunshine, but no one really cares because most people have never seen it lol.) |

Beyond's a lot better than people will ever give it credit for, but yes: having to basically junk the Bob Orci movie and start over left them in a financial hole that even the very decent grosses for either of the first two movies would've struggled to cover.
