It would be interesting to compare the framing. Aside from that, screenshot comparisons don't really interest me. They are sort of fun to check out I guess. I'm sure once the Blu-ray is released we'll have plenty of screenshots comparisons to check out. I personally don't plan to do any comparisons to the DVD's. I own this on DVD in both AR's and have watched the series several times. Have no intention of giving the DVD's a spin again once I own this on Blu-ray. Should look fantastic projected at 150" diagonal unlike the DVD's.

Here are a couple of shots compared to the 4:3 DVD. I cut a line across it at the bottom so you could see the difference. The black on the sides is native to the DVD, and the DVD is obviously on top of the HD trailer, so you can compare that to the picture quality in the post above.

Well that comparison is a nice surprise because the way people have gone on I just assumed when they created the widescreen version they took the 4:3 versions and just cropped stuff off the top and bottom but its more like what they did with the early seasons of The X-Files where they lost a bit top and/or bottom but they also gained info on the sides.

At least when something is shot 16:9 'safe' with the 4:3 framing set *inside* the 16:9 (e.g. X-Files S3 onwards) it preserves the original height of the frame, more or less, and although I don't like the dead space on the sides I'd rather that than have a large chunk of original image area chopped off. You can't fully expand the width if it's not there, natch, which is why they had to embiggen FTETTM in this manner. It was probably shot 1.33 TV safe in 4-perf Super 35 rather than sound offset Academy 35, hence the equal amount of moderate expansion on the sides rather than the extreme left bias you'd get from moving into the soundtrack area. However, if it sounds like I doth protest too much then I managed to get through the widescreen DVD without bursting into flames and hey, it's still From the Earth to the Mother-****ing Moon in HD Blu-ray so I'm there day 1 regardless. |

The press releases have stated the below will be included.
"Inside the Remastering: A behind-the-scenes look at the decision-making process and work put into updating and replacing the previous CG effects." Not sure if any of the DVD bonus content was ported over. If not I'll just revisit the DVD sets I own of this. |

Disappointing. There is one new extra, "Inside the Mastering Process." The only extra that has been carried over from the DVD is the 30-minute behind the scenes featurette. The Blu-ray has lost the special effects feature (likely replaced by the remastering feature), the trailers, and all of the other historical context features. It would have been nice to retain all the extras, but I wasn't planning on getting rid of my DVDs anyway, with the lenticular Earth/moon case.
