I am willing to watch the trailer as you suggested. Could please provide a link?

But the oar should be respected. Shame.
Unless it was shot with widescreen in mind while protected for 4:3. When this show aired in the 90's, few people had widescreen televisions to begin with, but studios were already protecting shows like The X-Files and shot them in HD all the same (in the case of The X-Files, that started somewhere around Season 5 or 6, don't remember), even though the 4:3 protected version aired on TV. One could argue the show has no true OAR -- one 4:3 version for old televisions, one version prepared for the coming HD 1.78:1 future. If that's the case, then no, the Blu won't be a wide-screen version of a 4:3 series created merely by lopping off vertical information. It will be the widescreen version already shot in the late 90's., a version that was protected for 4:3 during principal photography.

This a crude "don't take it literally" graphic explaining this...

someone showed screen shot comparisons, it clearly showed info cut off the top and bottom from the 4:3 One showed a pic of a plaque with bottom line of words cut off in 16:9. Even your pic shows that a small amount of info would be cut the top and bottom for the 16:9 (same is true for the sides for 4:3).

Why didn't they just film it 16:9 and simply cut off the sides to make the 4:3? Why have it be that either way(4:3 or 16:9), you are losing info? That makes no sense. (assuming I understand your "crude" graphic properly)

found this on wikipedia's page about the show, under production information
Quote:
The original series was shot in 1.33:1 aspect ratio, intended to be viewed on standard television sets. The series was released on DVD as a 4-disc set. With the proliferation of widescreen flat-panel TV sets the series was remastered in 1.78:1 aspect ratio and re-released in 2005 as a 5-disc DVD box set. New framing causes loss of top and bottom parts of the frames from the original movie. This is not always noticeable because of careful transfer process, but in some scenes important details are lost. For example, in Disc 1, when the Gemini 8 / Agena assembly is tumbling around the sky with a stuck thruster, the thruster is not visible in the new widescreen version as it is cut off by the top of the frame. Some captions have also been compromised

Entirely possible they have reframed the show during the HD remaster so the problem shots from the DVD release wouldn’t be as noticeable.

That's what I'm guessing happened. We'll find out soon enough.

I saw in a piece my local newspaper did about all the Apollo 11 programs airing this month that HBO is airing the new HD version, but I didn't see if the date is before or after the product ships. So either way we will know very soon.

Negative Format 35 mm (Kodak Vision 500T 5279, Eastman EXR 200T 5293)

There are good folks around here vastly more knowledgeable about film stocks and formats than myself, but 35mm film stocks can produce various aspect ratios depending on what era you're talking about, and this is why there is so much confusion about the Disney animated features from the 60's and 70's that everyone grew up with on VHS...the films were intended to be seen theatrically in widescreen aspect ratios, the VHS, laserdiscs, and even the early DVD releases for these films presented the "protected for 4:3" area of the negative...protected for TV airings, while also being able to present the films in widescreen theatrically....more information on the sides, but losing information on the top and bottom. When they were brought to home theater in the version you would have seen in the theater, people (including myself) thought they were lopping off the top and bottom of the frame...that wasn't the case at all. They were the theatrical versions with more information left and right, but less information top and bottom. People went round and round about it on message boards for years.

On July 15, all 12 digitally-remastered episodes will be available to watch on HBO Go, HBO Now and HBO On Demand. Then, on July 20 — the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing — HBO2 will air a marathon of the complete series, starting at 8:45 a.m. (ET/PT).
