Default What has HD DVD got left up their sleeves..?

Ok, so this has probably been talked about on and off now for the last 6 months but I'm interested to know from the people on this forum what they think realistically and factually based HD DVD has left to throw at Blu-ray this year and next.

From what I can make out film wise they've not really got a whole lot left in the pot so to speak. I know there's some good back catalogue movies they could bring out but no more so than the likes of Fox and co but generally Back catalogue titles don't entice people to buy into a new format(my opinion only) anywhere near what new titles do. As example I wonder how many Playstation 3 owners out there bought there first Blu-ray because of Casino Royale or now 300, huge block-buster films that people will stand up and take notice of. Evan Almighty? Bourne Ultimatum? Knocked up? From my own point of view for last quarter there's only Bourne Ultimatum that could really tempt people into buying HD DVD.

I also can't see how Toshiba even with a major drop in price will be able to compete with the volume of new Playstation 3 owners out there gained this christmas. Even if they only buy the odd film on the format the sheer numbers dictate that they'll further widen the gap to 3 to 1 by next year come the next big films hitting the format that'll persuade them to dip they're toes into the calm Blu-Ocean for the first time..

What do you guys and gals think?

1. XBOX 720 with an HD-DVD drive

2. More Universal catalog titles

3. Another price reduction, say $99 after mail in rebate of $100. Nobody ever turns those in anyway right

honestly, the situation with HDDVD is going no where. I mean yes they have Universal as their exclusive studio, but face it it is one guy picking the fight against many. Warner bros is neutral but they had better sales on BD for their releases like the departed, and 300 for ex. paramount will be taking advantage of BD'S storage capacity, they will be releasing more compared to HDDVD, and it will start with face off. not counting Sony, Disney, and Fox being exclusive studios in favor of Blu-ray VS. Universal. Its true fox haven't released anything because of BD+, but once they start, the format war is over. Even microsoft who is exclusively supporting HDDVD, isn't sure about it, which is why the elite didn't come out with built in HDDVD player.

bottom line the technology is going nowhere. there is nothing they can do, but embarress themselves and keep on going.

Black Friday, especially since they know Wal-Mart is going to spit out all those Chinese Blu players for Black Friday, will drop their decks $100 again, and extend their 5 free giveaway combined with in-store discounts and/or freebies, plus combo pack it with Toshiba TVs (buy LCD, get free HD player)

Blu will counter with a similar strategy, and it'll come down to the titles. Uni has Battlestar Blasphemy and the Bourne Trilogy (Heroes will have fizzled on sales by then too much to be a major factor)

Blue has Pirates Trilogy, Lost, and assuming Fox comes back, Die Hard Quadrilogy, Fantastic 4, 2 Spidey Trilogy, Pixar 3-pack, Santa Clause 3 (it's a big seller, don't ask me why)

And that's just the exclusives. Suffice to say Blu will surround their decks and TVs with "You can't get this on Red", and that will be the end of that

a desperado attack to BDA, but not even enough to shake BD let alone destroy it.

If Hd dvd were smart they might try to get Transformers to be exclusive... Or would it be a Blu exclusive? Who made it?

Paramount will release it.

No worries there, they seem to now be BD leaning. Having walked away from the VC-1 koolaid table and using AVC on both formats, and are now providing proper lossless audio (although not on all HD DVD - e.g. Blades of Glory)

If not BD leaning, at least BD enthusiast mentality (AVC + lossless).

Easily possible.. but assuming it is not enough to really aid in winning the war it only makes them loose or make less money on Xbox360 sales. I don't think it will happen.

Absolutely. Nothing wrong with either, given sufficient bandwidth. But, I think we all can agree that the best results we are seeing right now are coming from AVC.

All that's left for Toshiba to do is to offer their 3rd generation entry level player right around the upcoming holiday season for $199.99 with 10 free HD DVD's. That's basically giving their hardware away.

Paramount who owns Showtime is neutral, at least for the moment so it would come to both

M$ being cratfy, they are always a crafty group. They can suprise you but I think this time they can get a black eye if the cards are played right. In this enviroment, there are too many powerful pro blu-ray companies to muscle out of the way.

Lol... I was waiting for someone to put that...

In a way thats the answer to my first post. I could see the writing on the wall for them and really did wonder what the hell they had left in the tank. One bit of bad news after another and there was no sign of anything from them in return. Still I say again... lol... what has HD DVD got left up they're sleves.. Siging Paramount up for HD DVD is like papering over the cracks in your house when it's on fire.. new sig I think..
