Default Reeves uncertain over PS3's 10-year lifespan

http://ps3.nowgamer.com/news/218/ree...-year-lifespan

Quote:
SCEE boss David Reeves has expressed uncertainty over the PS3's proposed 10-year-life span

During an interview in an upcoming issue of Play magazine, Reeves said Nintendo and Microsoft will have new models on the market before Sony would, but that he doesn't know whether the PS3's lifespan will be "eight, nine, or ten years."

"The competition will have new models on the market by the end of the PS3," commented Reeves. "I have no doubt and we’ll have to be fast on our feet.....I don’t know whether the PS3 lifespan will be eight, nine or ten years"

It was only last month that SCE president Kaz Hirai reiterated Sony's firm commitment to hold back on the PS3's successor for 10 years.
i've always thought 10 years was wishful thinking anyways for the ps3, but who knows what will happen after this year and all the awesome games its going to have.

i swear i searched this time..better not be a repost!

I think it will easily have a 10 year lifespan, even after the PS4 is released. People are equating 10 year lifespan with it won't be until after the 10th year that the PS4 will be released. I am still purchasing PS2 games that aren't out for the PS3 well after I own a PS3. So the PS2's lifespan is being increased by those kind of games.

The PS3 still hasn't even gotten it's legs under it yet in terms of capabilities and pushing them to it's limits. I truly hope they don't stop making games for it when they just learn how to program for it and get the most out of it.

well the only reason i've always said it'll be hard to get 10 years is because its no ps2. 8 sounds reasonable to me

Ps3 will have a 10 year cycle. Remember, a PS4 release does not mean the end of the PS3 10 years..

So come this November, that's it for the PS3 because the PS4 sure isn't coming out then? I'm hoping that was just a typo.

I expect the PS3 to last a solid 2-3 years after the release of the PS4. So depending on when that gets released will determine the life span of the PS3.

since people keep posting it. i think we all realize 10 years doesn't mean 10 years until ps4. but just because sony wants a 10 year life span, doesn't mean they're going to get that much out of it

I think that it will do well and make the 10 years. Once the price drops, there will be people who pick it up cheap and they will be looking at the older games and picking up new ones. If the price drops to 299 and there's a huge rush to pick it up why would they want to bring out a newer system when they've got a lot of new people on the system. It will give it even more drive to get games out for it. It also depends on what the PS4 will bring to the table. If it doesn't offer that much more over the PS3 it will be hard to convince people to upgrade to it, especially if they continue to offer the PS4 games on the PS3 as they do now with the PS3/PS2 split.

The PS3 is powerful enough that it can last a good while before feeling out dated technology wise. They were very forward thinking with the system, and that is what will allow it to survive so long. It wasn't just a slight grade better with still current tech, it was all completely new tech that was designed to push the envelope.

The PS3 will be around for a long time , hell it's got every feature in the world. There are some things that that could be upgraded of course like RAM & so on the PS4 will have bitstream ablitys but what other major things can they do besides the obvious things. The PS3 will still be a leader in the "game".

Where is PS4/Next XBOX and next WII going?

Ok, I agree to a certain degree things could be done better networking wise, you could have more things built in. But as far as the consumer is concerned the graphics and sound will not change things much. 1080p all the way obviously, 7.1 surround sound. The power may make the devs life easier but if they can throw games out at 2 a year each, they will have to be more creative.

I can't imagine buying 16 shooters a year, 8 GT5's and 5 Resident Evils.

hmm, I think people may forget that computational power doubles approximately every 18 months. By early 2013 when the PS4 would probably be out, we could assume that the device would be about 10 times more powerful than the current model, if not more.
greater numbers of 3D applications, full 1080P at 60 fps, perhaps even real time ray tracing...

There is much room to expand over the PS3.

I find this quote most interesting. Seriously, after seeing Killzone 2, MLB 09:The Show, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, etc. I have serious doubts that we'll be seeing graphics on PS3 that look much better than these titles. I could be wrong of course, and I hope I am. I just think that in 09 and 010 we'll be seeing the best the system can do. I still have high hopes for Gran Turismo 5 in that the final game will look noticably better than Prologue but we'll see.

i dont believe this at all .. those games could possible push the machines actual possible limit BUT game makers always seem to later in hte lifespan find ways of using hte machine differently to make even better looking games .. its not always about hte pure power of hte machine but also in how devs Utilize that power ...

I dont see what the big deal is. the ps2 is going on 9 years right now, what makes people think ps3 is not going to do the samething. sony was the first to do this, i think they know what their doing.

who would buy 3 xbox's in 8 years

the reg xbopx has a cycle of 4 years and the 360 has already peaked.

even the reg xbox had NO EXCLUSIVE GAMES besides halo, which i hate.

ps3 will be here for a while.
when xbox decides to make a new system AND put the blu ray & hdd in every new xbox, watch how much it costs

they are far away from intropducing a new system due to $$$$$

by the end of this year sony will overtake.

you have a dying console (360) and an emerging system (ps3) its a no brainer.

when the game producers START making games for ps3 then port to 360 is when ill let out a big cheer.
us ps3 owners get ripped off by xbox. game developers HAVE TO design games for no hdd as not every 360 owner has an hdd.

9gb space on a dvd disc. 50gb on a ps3 disc.

ever wonder why ps3 exclusives ALWAYS look better than games shared for both systems......look above for the reason.

it just cant happen that xbox releases another system,. its too costly.

the dominance of ps3 should emerge late this year and continue for a good 5 years

with the 360 all xbox did was make a glorified reg xbox with hd graphics. i never have gotten the "wow factor" with 360

forza 2 looks super cartoonish compared to GT prologue.

the only reason i don't see a full 10 years is because it doesn't have the same support the ps2 had. but like i said, that could change this year
