I think it is here to stay for at least the next ten years and even longer.

Imo a higher resolution format would have only a small benefit to an even smaller group of people. You'd need a really large display to outshine 1080p and there might come a point, when the size of people's houses limit what they can fit in there. Not everyone wants a super-large display to dominate the living room. So i think the market for a format with a higher resolution than 1080p wouldn't be here in the near future. This might change, when you get displays the size of a wall and easy to install, like a (transparent) wall-paper. This might be decades away from now though.

Also the BD format could be improved in itself, like "deep color" and "lossless" video codecs. We'd all need new players though (i guess).

There is always a chance, that technology will bring up something really revolutional and HD on a disc seems to be as old-fashioned like VHS was compared to DVDs. Right now, i don't really see any of the competitors having the edge over BD for a pretty large number of reasons.

CBHD is a chinese movie format. In fact it is something like the attempt to bring HD DVD to the chinese market, where it will also compete with BD which afaik already has a headstart.

Due to the studios commitment to Blu-ray, it is imo very unlikely that it will spill over to other nations like the U.S, if it even manages to be a success in China. The studios have had their format war and i think everyone has had quite enough of HDM format wars for a while....

I think so.

While there is no theoretical limit to film resolution, I think 1080p is the practical one for most. 2160? 4320? How many cycles do you expect consumers to go through? Blu is set to weather the next revolution, which, is set to be 3D tv in about 20 years.

We're good.

Thumbs up Blue Ray Lifespan

Nothing lasts forever, so relax and enjoy the format. Most likely it should last about ten years or so. Look how long VHS tapes, Laser Discs and now DVDs stayed around.

I don't think one should worry so soon about Bd's lifespan, it's still a baby at 2 years old

like previous poster said, look how long VHS lasted.. (long time) and DVD.. that's been around for like 11 years now.. BD will live a long time, methinks

I do think Blu-ray will have a long life span like DVD did. The image quality is amazing on Blu, and I honestly do not see how much better it can get. Sure higher resolutions would be nice, but that higher res, your going to up end needed bigger TV's, and i'm sure living room sizes stop at a certain point

I would probably worry about LCDs and Plasma's more than Blu, with OLED TV's, LaserTV and 3D televisions, that process would probably change more than Blu.

You think Blu looks amazing on LCD and Plasma? Wait til you see it on OLED, it looks pretty sweet. I've seen it in person, playing Click, and, the colours extremely nice.
