Here's more MPAA nonsense: Army of Darkness was aiming for (and should have received) a PG-13 rating. According to Bruce Campbell, they had to fight to get an R-rating, because it was in serious danger of getting an NC-17!

There are some exceptions, but it feels like films which used to be G (like Disney animated movies) are PG now, and films which were PG (like the Star Wars and TMNT movies) are PG-13, despite some of them being pretty tame. The G rating is all but gone, and it’s funny how in the pre PG-13 era, there are some PG movies which would get an R now and G movies that would get PG-13

The lead character is a native so the nudity might be seen as natural and non-sexual, but the actress is very attractive and was a Playboy centerfold at one point. So it was obviously put in the movie to titillate the audience. It also has a fair amount of bloody violence. For various reasons this movie just wouldn't be made at all today.

Gremlins was awesome too. Scary stuff when they were in those cocoons in the kid's room. And when they hopped into the pool. They were definitely monsters. Gizmo was good, but also the origin of evil.

Even the poster for it had a disclaimer saying that it had material too intense for children.

Canada's rating system is better and more lax. Most R-rated films in the US get a 14a rating here, which is basically the equivalent of PG-13.

18a is usually for movies with extreme violence.

Same with PG-13, which at times can be R-rated level violence but because of how it's edited (no blood or gore) it can slide by.
