Default Polk Audio

I order the Onkyo Ht-S6100 and when it got to the house, the reciever was dead. I sent it back for a refund and decided to go ahead and build a system like everyone suggests. I was in my local BB today and found the Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 speaker package on sale for 129.00 so I picked it up since I have seen it mentioned a few times here for a starter set. I am looking for a decent reciever now, my budget is to stay in the low 300 range or so. Any ideas? I am not to worried about the HD audio right now as I will likely upgrade in the future, a year or so out more than likely. Just something to get decent sound out of my speaker package for now.

well i would say stick with onkyo. You can pick up the 605 for under $300 and the 606 for around $350. Both amazing receivers! You might also want to look out for the yamaha 663. Honestly though best thing to do...go back to BB and have a listen to the receivers in your price range, as all will have their own unique sound characteristics.

I thought about doing that but I am a complete audio virgin so I can not say I know exactly what I am listening for other than just a clean sound. I dont need all the new just out bells and whistles, all I do is watch movies and play COD5 on my ps3. Is the STR-DG820 Sony 7.1 receiver actually worth 399?

well if you do not want the bells and whistles i would go with the sony str-dg720. you will still be able to get the HD audio codecs, even through the receiver cannot process them internally, the PS3 decodes them and sends the PCM signal to the receiver. It is a good receiver that will give you good sound, hd audio and for a price that is within your budget, it is $299

I wouldn't pay $399 for it, you can find something comparable for much less. If you are set on Sony, the next gen should be coming out soon. I would wait and see what prices look like on the STR-DG9XX series, it should be comparable or less for a better receiver.

I am not really stuck on sony, just have a little more felxability from buying that receiver from its local store in my town. I am just lookng for a decent receiver, preferably a 5 channel setup versus 7 channel since I wont ever have a need for 7.1 in my current home. I couldnt find that Onlyo 605, I read some reviews and I am almost certain that would be the one I would buy if I could find it.

The Onkyo 606 is a newer version of the 605.
I would also expect a 607 to be coming out within the next few months.

Wow that's a good price on the Polk surround set. Typically I've only seen it for about $200! Good Find... I'm in the same position pretty much... leaning towards the Onkyo 606 if I can find a hot deal on it somewhere.

Today I purchased the Polk Audio 5.1 Rm6750 System. Now all I need is a A/V Receiver to pair it up with and enjoy HD sound.

No such thing as "won't ever" in this business! I'd say get the 7.1 because you may later want it and won't have it and if you don't want it you can bi-amp you front speakers now (if the speakers you have accept it or in the future should you upgrade your front speakers. of course you might always up and buy 2 back channels and there ya go! I stopped saying "never or won't eve or don't need" a long time ago in this thing! I'm happy with both Onkyo and Polk Audio, Check out my rig! best of luck buddy.

I just recently picked the new yamaha rx-v465, its a great 5.1 receiver, and it does decode the hd codecs. picked it up for a little over $300. i highly recommend this receiver to anyone looking for a 5.1 receiver.
