glad i cancelled my pre-order.

i bottled out in the end - i just can't bring myself to trust studios 100% to do good with catalog titles. even if we are getting good ones like casino.

my concern with all the titles being released in the next couple of months is how many of these will be done on the cheap just to get some cash - like this set it seems.

i'm wondering if i should now cancel all pre-orders and just see how things go. as much as i want to support this format, i'm not going to be a sucker.

Universal is so weird. This is the same company the did The Mummy and Hulk on UHD. I don't get how quality can vary this widely.

I just wonder if there are different groups within the organization that have different approaches. For example, maybe one team or lead within that team has more skill or a different philosophy versus another group, etc.

I think I’ll wait until this set is substantially discounted.

A shame, really as I was hoping that these transfers would be competently handed. I should have remembered the dubious track record that Universal has for catalogue titles.

Could these have been at least transferred and mastered a while back when Universal was being, you know, Universal and they were just sitting on the shelf, and not recent efforts? The most recent 4k stuff by Universal has been such a great improvement, so for these to just flip the other way, is just... weird.

If I were Edgar Wright, I'd be pissed.

I bought all 3 on sale in iTunes awhile ago. Hoping they get upgraded to 4K and extras added tomorrow. If not I may pick this up or get the individual releases

But you are then trusting them to get the correct black level in the conversion each and every time. Even the experts make mistakes there are evidenced by the myriad of discs with incorrect black levels.

Someone who actually has the discs has now confirmed the black levels are captured properly in those caps shortly after I posted that, and I'll take their word for it. You've been proven to be right even if I find your trust in caps misplaced, so that brings me to what on earth your point is....

I deleted those because I didn't want to have all that crap in there for other people to read. I thought you were on the same page since you did minutes after I did. So I don't want to do this again either, so why even bring it up?! Everyone's entitled to make mistakes in my view, it's all learning, but do you need to feel all superior, snowflake? You don't come here to share your knowledge, you use it to clout people with for your own emotional benefit.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but standalone releases are coming on November 5.

Just gonna call this for what it is... people justifying the priority queue for a very heavy purchase period. You do you -- So funny when some choose to take SDR caps to the bank

I trust certain aspects of caps from people who have proven to either be semi-competent (capsaholic, their highlight mapping is shite but the blacks are usually spot on) or all the way competent (andreasy969, best darned 4K capper in the West). Maybe I shouldn't have taken caps from rando forums members as gospel, more fool me given what I just said, but unless people are doing something very, very wrong then the black floor should not be unduly affected by the conversion.

Of course I deleted those other comments, otherwise it looked I was just clouting myself. I do enough of that at home, no need to have it on public display as well

I'm just now looking at caps of these titles. All I can say is that with UHD, I feel pretty confident that this is the end of the line for me as far as "upgrades" go. With the arrival of BD (and HD DVD), one could count titles that were inferior or a wash with the prior DVD formats on a single hand. Everyone knew what they were (upscaled Traffic and some Studio Canal titles, DNR abortion Evil Dead 2, etc). But everything else was an upgrade that didn't even require comparing screencaptures. With UHD, there's just too many titles where you have to toggle back and forth to find any improvement.

You have to wonder if there's an A team and a B team at their home video department. Not just the Cornettos but also Waterworld, it's got some nice moments but is otherwise processed up the Arras hole. But Hulk and Scorpion King, hey let's give these classics the treatment they deserve! As people have said, it's like the more popular something is the more the intention is to wreck it - though Casino seems to have broken that rule, thankfully.

What does andreasy do that caps-a-holic (and anyone else using MadVR's tonemapping, myself included) do not? I was pretty sure he also just uses MadVR and sets the nits himself (100, 150, 200, what have you) just like everybody else? That's not a jab, if I can be taking better screenshots, I'd want to be.

Disappointed in reading some of the negative feedback regarding the PQ on these.

I don't really care about Hot Fuzz but I do care about Shaun and World's End. Expecting my trilogy set to be delivered some time this week and will then start watching Shaun right away.
