So far over $3000 on speakers for B&W 5.0 surround sound. Looking at a Velodyne 15 in sub, all in good time.

That's roughly what I spent on my 5.0 setup as well (I think it was like $3,185). Gonna pass on the sub for now as I just blew $1600 on a new turntable.

I'd wager that you'll get much more enjoyment out of your new TT than you would out of any sub!

You can bet your life I will! I can't wait! Still no word from my dealer and I'm getting anxious! Have about 15 LP's unopened that I'm dying to try out. Should have my new "The Police: Certifiable" (vinyl, of course) by the weekend too!

I've almost got the basement finished so I can set up a home theatre down there. It'll be complete soon, I'm pumped. I've got the TV (LN-52A650) and the PS3. Now I need to select the surround sound system.... I was leaning towards a HTiB, but after reading the forums here and at AVS, I decided against it. Setup will be primarily for movies and games.

Currently considering:
1. Onkyo SR606 or SR706 $450 or $550
2. Speakers... unsure here, Here's what I'm thinking:
_____2x Polk T90e - $300/pair
_____Polk RM6750 5.1 surround set - $250
3. PS3 for Blu-ray player...

Total... right around $1,000
Thoughts? Is this a good setup/price range for a Surround Sound virgin?

Receiver costs are too high, T90e's are going for $149 each right now I think, and the RM6750 you shouldn't spend over $200 for. If you can knock down some of those prices you'll save a lot of money. I would also recommend to consider listening to other brands as well as those Polks at a Best Buy with a Magnolia store or local hi-fi shop.

Check out www.wwstereo.com I just got a pair of Energy c-300's for $250 a pair, those are excellent speakers and a great price, also got an Energy c-c100 for $122 off of www.buy.com to match, you can also get a pair of c50 surrounds for about $99 at wwstereo and that would be a much better way to setup over the RM6750's and would be about $570 before a sub and receiver. Look at this thread and you can get a great deal on a sub, that is what I am gonna do, then use the rest of your budget on a reciever, Onk 606 should be fine.

Check out the Yamaha's as well. With the new models now out, you should be able to find some good deals on existing AVR's as dealers are clearing that stock.

about 4500 invested with the gear I am using now. I do plan to upgrade my mains and surrounds later this year. Certainly none of my stuff is in the audiophile class, but the Pioneer Elite gear is good. The SVS sub is exceptional. I am happy. The Wife is happy. Life is good.

I don't really think that the 550- 600 pound weight would be a problem. I have used this vehicle since 1998 for carrying my photos to Art Shows. I used to carry about 1500 pounds in the back of the vehicle with the heavy duty 500 pound per side coil springs. For about the last 5 years I still put about 400 to 500 pound+ in the van and tow a trailer with the weight of the trailer and the contents weighing about 2200 pounds for Art Shows. I have driven this way pulling a trailer for over 65,000 miles. The transmission had to be replaced with a rebuilt Jasper at about 163,000 miles. I have now over 205,000 miles on the original engine. I do go through brakes though even though there are brakes on the trailer.

The list price we suspect will be over $30,000 through direct sales. The speaker designer has indicated that he has never heard speakers sound this good and he is still working on the crossover, the speakers have not yet broken in, and he still doesn't have the good speaker cables which are on order. Things are being done in the speaker preparation that are not done by any other speaker manufacturer. I may become an investor in the speaker line, but that is only in preliminary discussions. Additionally, once I get a new place and everything is set-up, my listening room/home theater may become a show room for these and some of the other speakers (that I would be using) that are still in development. If they do sell through audio stores (which we may avoid) the big towers may have to sell for a lot more due to mark-up.

Rich

I don't know how you feel about Dynaudio but If you have ever heard the Evidence Temptations then Just pm and I Can link you to them for like 29 per tower.. I know they are old but 15k off the base price is great..

Am I reading this right? $29,000 PER speaker?

My upgraded (modified twice) and rebuilt Dahlquist DQ-10 cabinets each have 2 soft dome Dynaudio drivers (a tweeter and a midrange) per cabinet.

Thank you for the offer, but that is much more than I would like to spend since you are suggesting $58,000 for the pair. Additionally, since I am participating in the start-up and possibly investment in this product, my cost on these huge towers will be considerably less than the projected price (which is still in flux at this time). In addition, and without any opportunity for comparison, the towers in question may outperform the Dynaudio speakers that you have suggested.

Rich

I think the discussion about speakers in that price range is so far beyond my means that I hesitate to bring up further discussion about it. However, that wouldn't be me, so here we go:

Obviously you are both passionate about audio and have the means to delve into equipment others only dream about. I can probably also accurately surmize that you both are very knowledgeable on the subject. I never even heard (auditioned) a speaker in the price range you guys own or are about to own, but I have to question whether or not you both have surpassed the point of diminishing returns from an auditory perspective. This is not a post to slight anyone, please let that be clear, but I have a difficult time in accepting that the cost justifies the end result.

Hi John,

Yes, we are lunatics; in my case, I hope this is a 1 time purchase and as a result of inheritance, otherwise..... Also, if what I am understanding to be the case of the speakers that I am expecting to purchase, my price is a no brainer for their performance, but I will confirm that when I hear them. So for the price that I will pay, it is not a question of diminishing returns since these will cost me about the same as much less expensive speakers in many a line. High End speakers, like many other high end products frequently have a 10X mark-up of their parts costs.
