Another film that is remotely comparable to "Spider Baby" would be Pete Walker's 1974 indie horror flick "Frightmare," which is also about a dutiful guardian (father) trying to protect the "family secret" at all cost. Coincidentally, it also has something to do with cannibalism. Both films also have a memorably evil daughter character: Jill Banner in "Spider Baby," and the aptly named Kim Butcher in "Frightmare."

However, I missed the Reunion. btw~ when comparing eras there's no contest. One was a pioneer of Horror Punk inspired by The Ramones the other just another Misfits knock-off with only one good album imo (Famous Monsters) ![]() |

I enjoyed both. "Spider Baby" tackles the difficult genre of black comedy and it pulls it off very well. "Frightmare," made a decade later, is more nihilistic and depraved, and it has a great villainous performance by Sheila Keith who is probably worth the price of admission alone. One is an homage to classic Universal campy gothic horror, like the ones Lon Chaney used to star in. The other is a fairly modern and gritty horror.

Okay, okay. It's been more than several years since my first viewing of the Pete Walker film, but based upon the recommendation of you gents, maybe it's due for a revisit. I only remember not being impressed with it at all. However, that was also before my appreciation for genre films is what it is now too.

I totally agree. Both films are great in different ways About Spider Baby...I was thinking this must have been inspired Cult films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Both are a tongue in cheek homage to the genre of the past. And the character Peter (Uncle) reminded me of Brad in a kind of naive silliness. Also, both Emily and Janet become sexually liberated (in a way ![]() Both characters started out as kinda prudish. |

I just saw him about 7 weeks ago and he seemed frail but certainly not sick. He even discussed the filming of Beyond Atlantis and how it was the worst shoot he ever did.

Sometimes, I just have to ignore my still-unwatched Blu-ray stack and revisit one of my faithful faves. I had a lot of fun going through my Arrow Blu-ray of Spider Baby again last night.
I already posted a review on the previous page a few years back, and that glowing recommendation still stands. This is one of my favorite under-recognized horror films. |

Just watched this the other day on Amazon Prime (pretty shoddy transfer, especially the sound, but better than nothing I guess). I enjoyed it, and it definitely seems like a precursor to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes.

What's weird is that my UK Arrow import is region B locked, yet this sight claims it's both region A and B locked. That means it should play on my regular player, correct? It doesn't.
Edit: Holy-schnikes. It read that if you push Top Menu it does play and they are correct! Awesome! |
