Question Is the XBox 360's HD DVD player worth the $180 ?

$180...you also get 7 free movies.

I have a PS3 is this player worth the $$?

I only got 6 free movies BUT do you have a 360 with an HDMI cable? if not then it is not worth it. If yes, yeah sure go ahead and I suggest The Bourne series.

why would you get the hd dvd add on??? it litterly only has about 3 good movies that you won't be able to get on blu-ray by nov., it prolongs this stupid war, and it costs you 180 bucks. ill had that unless you have the elite, you won't get an hdmi input/output, and your going to be stuck with low bit-rate flicks.

This person said it right! Without HDMI capabilities, it is worthless to get the HD-DVD add-on because, even though they claim that 1080p is possible over component cables, you still have signal degradation as the picture gets broken into 3 seperate streams and then put back together again at the TV. In my opinion, any signal that has to be broken up and put back together will lose detail and clarity to some degree. So, if you really want HD-DVD and don't have the 360 Elite, get a standalone Toshiba player.... However, keep in mind, that either way it is a waste of money!!! LOL

I use to have the add on, but in my oppinion, it looks tacky having to sit it ontop or next to the 360. I couldnt really comment on pic quality because it was the first HD movie I had ever watched, looked good though.

But I decided to sell the system mainly because bluray had better titles, AND lossless audio formats. Even if you had the 360Premium (hdmi)...it has no way of decoding Dolby trueHD .... so its basically a player that can give you great pic yes, but next generation audio??? forget about it.

If you will be watching 1080i, there is a small difference between the HDMI and the component outputs. There have been comparisons done between the Xbox 360 Elite and the Xbox 360 with no HDMI, and most of them state that HDMI is not that much better than component. So HDMI would not even be a factor in whether or not the HD-DVD add on would be worth the price. Bottom line HDMI and component outputs on the Xbox 360, as far as 1080i is concerned, are almost the same.

Well if you are like me and had purchased the Xbox 360 at launch and got the remote control, then as far as the HD-DVD drive goes it is a good deal, if you don't mind the 1.5 mbps DTS as your "high end" audio format. Especially since Best Buy has the 300 disc free with purchase and then when you sell the 5 other free ones plus King Kong and the media remote then you only end up like spending $19.00 for the drive. Of course this is when you factor $17.50-$20 per movie and then $20 for the remote, selling them all on ebay of course.

I mistakenly bought the add-on back when it first came out thinking that HD-DVD was the format to go with....

Plus, I figured that 200 dollars wasnt all that much to lose even if Bluray won...

Well, one PS3 and about 50 blurays later, and I hardly even use the stinking thing. The last movie I watched on it was Hot Fuzz, which is an awesome movie and I really enjoyed it....

If you really want something to watch HD-DVD's on though, for shame on you number one, but you can get the cheaper Toshiba players for around 200 dollars I think. It only does 1080i, but so does that add-on unless you have an elite.

However, you do get the loseless audio, but I find that most titles that I want on HD-DVD, like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are only DDplus titles anyways....

All in all if you cant wait for universal to go neutral, what the hell right? Your one player purchase is not going to prolong this format war anymore then Universal is getting paid to make it anyway....

It can't do lossless audio so it's really not worth it.

Depends I guess. You won't get the best audio with the add-on though the latest HD DVD update for the 360 is suppose to convert TrueHD to DTS 1.5 and another format by Microsoft (supposedly very good quality but I haven't heard it). I suppose with 7 free titles at about $20 each on average means you're only paying about $40 for the drive and remote control. Not a bad deal, at least you'll be able to watch the Bourne movies, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes and a few other good titles that are HD DVD exclusive. There are many who have also hooked up the add-on to their home computers and are using it that way as well.

I too owned the add-on earlier this year and sold it for an A2. That being said, I use my Blu-Ray player about 80% of the time and find myself using my HD DVD player less and less. Over the last few months Universal's catalog titles have been quite poor (PQ reviews) and while they have a few good movies coming out (Heroes, Battlestar, Bourne3) over the next 4 months or so, I would recommend waiting.

I suspect that HD DVD player prices will continue to plummet, and people will be almost giving players away on Ebay as HD DVD loses more and more marketshare to Blu-Ray. Although I like my HD DVD player, I have a feeling that it is just a matter of time before Universal goes neutral (I believe it will happen in Q1/Q2 of 2008).

And for the record, the add-on was not a very good player. I had problems playing a number of combo discs, and no lossless is a huge negative. As an earlier poster mentioned, the add-on also looks pretty ugly

Because people mistreated me the last time I was on this board for recommending Polar Express and Bridge to Terabithia over Apocalypto, I rarely come here anymore. But I'll share an idea to all you nasy, bastard, and cruel bluray fans who picked a fight with me the last time I was here and didn't appreciate my politeness. The 360 people may one day become your allies **ironically** in defeating HD-DVD. Their HD-DVD add-on has poor playback quality and the movie selections are better on bluray. Therefore, because all 360's currently lack a bluray drive and because most of the hi-definition movies they'll want to watch are on bluray, all 11 million 360 owners will eventually be forced to contemplate the purchase of a standalone bluray drive when they're ready to jump into hi-definition movies. And the PS3 seems to be the best bluray player in terms of value in the market right now. And since they are gamers, too, most would opt for the PS3unless they feel they've been burned too much in flame wars to love the PS3 anymore. Like I said to whomever it was that was bashing me for mentioning my preferences and tastes in movies that are different from their, I'm not going to waste anymore time in here. Good bye...!!!

I think it was BaeDaTruth and some other guy who didn't allow me to express my love for those movies and called me an idiot for liking those movies. When I said that I have just have differing tastes and that, for example, if I don't like drugs and perfer Jazz music over others, that's just an my opinion and personal preference and that I should have a right to mention this in a public forum without being insulted, that no one in the forum should feel intimidated to express their tastes in music or movies or games. After I told BaeDaTruth that I also like Jazz music over Classical and Heavey metal as my personal preference, he goes and says that most jazz singers and players also use drugs. Oh brother. I could care less if Jazz players like to do drugs. That doesn't mean that I can't say I like Jazz music. What kind of people belong to this forum? BLAH...!!!!

EGM page 35 / issue # 212 / February 2007 = 360's add-on has among the worse movie playback on the market. And the worse movie selections.

Most of you were good to me though. So there were really only two people. BaeDaTruth and some other guy who started the fight. I don't remember. But I'm in the wrong place. I gotta go. I won't reply to you either, so don't bother writing.

If you would let a few people keep you from enjoying this site, you are WAY too sensitive.

I believe a good deal of those 10 million Xbox 360 purchases are rebuys before MS extended their warranty.

To answer the OP question...I don't think it is worth it, but do as you wish.
