It was a thriller...a short thriller. It was good for what it was and it wasn't too drawn out, it was quick and to the point..just the way that genre should be. And it certainly was no different than similar movies from the past.

Also, as mentioned above...most people are desensitized to horror anyway. Films like Hostel and Saw turned " horror " into " gore "....gore and horror aren't the same things. Gore isn't scary, just nasty and hard to look at and makes your girlfriend close her eyes. Horror makes you jump or cringe in fear and makes your girlfriend hop in your lap. Big difference...

Vacancy was about a 3 out of 5 stars as a thriller...not a horror flick.

And always watch something for yourself before judging it. If it's Blu Ray..it can't be all that bad. Support it anyway.
Yeah I was going to respond with pretty much the exact same thing, but you beat me to it!

So you go by what other people tell you? Mel isn't even in the movie, he just directed it. And also, it's COULDN'T care less. If you could care less that means actually do care.

I liked it. A nice change of pace although I guess I'd agree with what some others said though...more of a thriller than a horror movie.

Wink 3 out 5 stars

As a thriller movie, I would give it 3/5 stars.

The plot was pretty simple and predictable. The story device of using characters who are weak and bumbling and get themselves killed or hurt is really annoying. I've gotten so tired of it that I almost want them to get what's coming.

Kate Beckinsale is always entertaining to watch, even thought she didn't have much to do in this film.

Thankfiully the movie is very short, and it didn't waste too much of my time.

I think that screenwriter could have made it a more interesting story with twists and gotcha's by making it a surprise at the end that the husband (or even the wife) was in on the whole thing.

This was worth a FREE rental (via my Blockbuster exchange). I'm glad I didn't buy it this week. I wouldn't watch it again.

On the other hand, this week I bought The Lookout and Wild Hogs, and really liked both. Wild Hogs seems like a stupid movie from the preview, but it really does have some great laughs in it.

ROFL! SAME HERE! Ive come to expect like gallons of blood throughout the entir emovie or like very gross disfigurations (like getting you eye torched out of your head and then having to sever it with a scalpel).

I am a sick and twisted man...I apologize....^_^

Well I'm going to give it a watch in a couple hours. Kate is worth the rental price. Second rental was free so its like half price. Gotta love that. Passed on Mels movie. Might be good but subs, I don't read to fast.

And you weren't smart enough to deduce it was crap based on the trailer??

Guess you got what you deserve; you probably also saw "Premonition".

I agree with you 100% on this.
There is something wrong with people who get off on all those disgusting, sick and retarded gore movies.
Good horror movies don't need gore at all.

Anyway, I thought Vacancy was a decent thriller and 3 out of 5 is OK. Unfortunately there are really no new 5 star movies out there this year (in any genre).

It can be considered both. Again, just because it doesn't have a lot of gore in it does NOT automatically make it a thriller.

I watched it last night in the dark with the sound blasting and I thought it was great; I thought the end was perfect (except for SPOILER:

him living, kinda hollywoodish and made it a little weak), but mostly it was a nice change.
Horror and Thriller are often combined, but not the same; like others said, this is a thriller, not a horror movie.
Both this movie and hostel are good and dissimilar (this movie is not as dark and gory as hostel, and much more family friendly.

According to the director, main cast members and studio (not to mention websites like IMDb), "Vacancy" is a horror film or a thriller (or a horror thriller).

Mod: I intentionally said "him" so that I did not spoil it, there are several ‘him's’ in the movie that may or may not die (thought that was enough, sorry).

And like I said (and others), it’s a thriller, I can’t help it the director thinks he made a horror film (the movie is suspenseful, but not scary); if it is a horror film, they failed at scaring/disturbing any of us watching it, including my 6 year old son and my 9 year old brother.
I assume they just combine the genres to accommodate the people who have no idea of the difference, nothing new in today’s mainstream movies.

You let your 9 year old brother and 6 year old son watch an "R" rated movie about snuff films? WOW. I have 6 and 4 year old sons and I wouldn't let them near that kind of stuff, let alone watch it.

What's next for the kids, porn?

I hope your sarcasm makes you feel better, it means nothing to me, and says a lot about you.
While you are on the PC, where are your kids, unsupervised in front of the billion dollar media box learning how to rap?
Who are you and what have you or your kids accomplished?
Since I have accomplished more in my life than most people, and my kids are very smart and more mature than my friends were at age 21, I have no worries about my kids future and the supervised movies they watch with us.
We are 2 parents with high IQ’s and 3 gifted boys; one of us is always home and available.
I would put my kids morals, education, independence, and IQ up against yours any day.
Good luck to you and your kids, and remember that you and the rest of the parents of C- students have the same media-force-fed beliefs.
