Unfortunately people on this forum don't care. The majority here are massive disney fanboys. It's so sad.

This is disgusting.

I always wondered why the art house theaters here never showed Disney films. Now I know why.

I recently saw a 35mm print of Commando here in Minneapolis and really enjoyed it. Now I won't be able to do that again unless the theater gets a privately owned print like they did with The Fly.

How can a small theater that makes at most $1000 on a print that would otherwise sit in the Disney archives threaten one of the largest companies on Earth? Disney would make money on that print too, and sending out a DCP is practically free.

It's stupid and greedy. I will never see The Sound of Music or Patton in 70mm because of this. Thankfully Sony, Warner, and Universal aren't this way.

And the article even says they've rather conspicuously made Rocky Horror Picture Show the sole exception. They know that taking that one off the screens would cause an uproar, but they can get away with everything else.

Yeah Disney can't be that stupid to remove Rocky Horror from theaters. I can understand the other films, but the audience participation is made Rocky Horror into a phenomenon. You might as well rob everyone's balls and tits if they were to remove Rocky Horror.

Do they honestly believe that a single annual repertory screening of an older film will cut into their streaming service revenue? It's literally a handful of screenings across North America for ONE day in the entire year.

Get bent di$ney.

Kids these days grew up with this trash thinking its the pinnacle of cinema.

Yeah, it's dumb. The whole point of going into a theater to see a movie is to see it in a theater. Big screen! Maybe in an actual film print! Impressive sound system! Doing it with your friends! None of which, except for the last one, you can easily reproduce at home, unless you're absolutely loaded.

I don't know about that. The Music Box here in Chicago screens a 35mm print something like once a month -- that's probably unusual, but it's not universally just a Halloween thing.

RHPS is the lone exception.

TCM screenings via Fathom Events at AMC/Regal locations and older movies that play at the Logan theater for example are now dead in the water.

Director Edgar Wright isn't a fan of it either:

A loud boo to Disney for this. Why not screen classic (or even non classic) Fox movies for paying audiences? Lots of my favourite movies, seemingly not longer available to screen... Alien, Raising Arizona, Phantom Of The Paradise & far too many more.

I know it's an exception; I was just responding to the assertion that its repertory presence amounted to one annual screening at a handful of theaters.

Right? Why can’t Fox just do it’s thing and Disney stay out of it? They reap the financial benefits of course but outside of that....what do they care?

Absolutely. Rocky horror has a lot of "things" in it that if you were to remove that movie it would cause protests, Twitter rage posts, uproars and whatever else. You know what I mean here? It’s a terrible movie too but it’s untouchable per se.

It’s obvious that Disney wants you to pay up for their useless streaming service and get stick watching lousy live action remakes of animated classics with 2019 "content updates". What a joke.

Oh yeah, this probably means that getting Aliens in UHD is probably gone now too for like a loooong time which sucks since we have the first one already. Ugh.

Now, let me get some popcorn as the Disney Defense team will be parachuting into this thread to do their duty.

Probably because they want the Fox and Lucasfilms brands to be separate for different kinds of movies.

I don't see how anyone could think this is good for cinema, or especially the theatrical experience. The audiences who usually turn out for special engagements and Fathom screenings are the some of the best you'll find. Some people won't care until Disney does away with something they love, and that indifference is only going to make them more bold.

Not a surprise, Disney really doesn't care about anything but $$$. They will do whatever it takess to squeeze $$$ out of people and while doing it give them lesser quality (especially audio) than other studios because they keep buying everything.
