Default Tick, Tick…Boom! (dir. Lin-Manuel Miranda) | Netflix

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Lin-Manuel Miranda has set Andrew Garfield to star in tick, tick…Boom! Miranda makes his feature directorial debut for Netflix on the adaptation of the autobiographical off-Broadway show written by Jonathan Larson, who shortly after went on to write the Pulitzer-winning musical Rent. Larson died tragically the night before the show’s first preview performance, before the show became a sensation.

Imagine Entertainment principals Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are producing with Imagine’s Julie Oh, and Miranda. Steven Levenson, the Dear Evan Hanson playwright who wrote Fosse/Verdon, is adapting the script from Larson’s original stage show. Julie Larson, Levenson and Celia Costas are the exec producers.

Garfield is essentially playing Larson in a musical about the young playwright’s towering ambition. Garfield will play Jon, an aspiring theater composer who waits tables in New York City while writing Superbia, which he hopes will be the great American musical that will finally give him his big career break. The young man is feeling pressure from his girlfriend Susan, who is tired of continuing to put her life on hold for Jon’s career aspiration. Meanwhile, Jon’s best friend and roommate Michael has given up on his creative dream and has taken a high paying advertising job on Madison Avenue and is preparing to move out. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety, wondering if his own impossible dream is worth the cost.

he autobiographical show was certainly prescient, as Larson posthumously won three Tony Awards for Rent, a show that enjoyed a dozen year run to become the 11th longest running show in Broadway history. When Miranda won his Pulitzer for Hamilton, he and Larson became two of only nine creators of stage musicals who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

CAA and Kate Bryden at Gordon and French in London rep Garfield, who was Oscar nominated for Hacksaw Ridge and won the Tony for Angels in America. Garfield recently wrapped production on the Gia Coppola-directed romance film, Mainstream, and he is currently shooting the role of scandalous televangelist Jim Bakker opposite Jessica Chastain’s Tammy Bakker (remember the tarantula eyelashes?) in the Michael Showalter-directed The Eyes of Tammy Faye for Fox Searchlight. Miranda is repped by WME and Liebman Entertainment.

I've done this show before, and I LOVE it; it's absolutely wonderful....

...and I do not think Lin-Manuel Miranda should be allowed anywhere near it.

For some reason I find Lin Manuel Miranda really annoying, despite never seeing him in anything. Possibly because he's a guy with two female names. Or alternatively three first names.

I TRULY wish this wasn't being directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, but I'm excited for this all the same

Looks good. Hopefully my Cinemark will be playing it like they did for Army of the Dead recently. As for LMM, perhaps the impending success of In the Heights will help propel his career to the next level.

oh WoooooooW !! actually I thought Miranda's direction was perfect... and Andrew Garfield's performance, he was giving it his all. The musical number 'Sunday' was a highlight of the year, bar none! In my Top Ten of the year (so far).

Thought this was incredibly well-done. I loved it. It was incredibly well-acted, directed and so moving. I don't think it's particularly accessible to mainstream commercial audiences; it is straight up an "inside baseball" (in this case, theater) valentine to musicals and Broadway and the creative process. This adaptation of his original musical monologue takes a ton of chances and I feel like it succeeds big-time. I am really hoping Netflix gets this out on disc and doesn't just hold it perpetually for streaming. A 4K would likely be way too much to hope for but I would be so happy with a Blu of this!

Really dug this at the virtual screening yesterday. Garfield is ****ing exceptional, the songs are superb (30/90 and Sunday are the highlights).

I loved it too - I'd buy this 4K, if that was ever a possibility, even in 5.1 the mix is very good, but I'd love to hear the Dolby Atmos mix. I can't wait to rewatch this on Netflix (three more days!)

I liked how the movie had an intro to the film from Lin-Manual Miranda and thanking everyone for coming out to see it in a theater. Old did the same thing, and felt even nicer here given it’s a Netflix movie
