Default Switching to format neutral...

as much as I have been a blu supporter, this move by paramount/dreamworks really is huge..even if blu does eventually win the war (which I think it will, once they start realizing its capabilities fully), it won't be for a long time. I can not wait around any longer hoping some movies will go blu. Sure, V for Vendetta is, but a lot of great movies I really want won't for a LONG time. I need the Bourne movies, and a lot of others, especially if Over the Hedge and other Dreamworks movies go to HD. Format neutral is the way to go, as there won't be a winner for a few years at the very least. Time to start buying an Hd player and some HDDVDs (no longer HD Duds)

Hate to say this but Im there with ya. But Im gonna wait till the end of the year to see if BDA is going to make a comeback before I break down and buy a Toshiba. If not, oh well, format neutral here I go.

If you truly believe that HD DVD will loose then you realize your investment will be worthless when this happens? I dont see how someone can spend hundreds maybe thousands of dollars on HD DVD when they also think it is going to loose.

Paramount bought HD DVD some time is all. End the end I think cross platform sales will determine where the studios go.

I wouldn't care that much except for 3 things...
1) I HATE Miscro$oft with a passion. Ergo, I hate the format they support.

2) I can not afford another player to hook into my system.

3) I have no ROOM for another player within my system. I only have 2 HDMI inputs on my AV receiver and that is being used by cable and my PS3. Unless I could find an inexpensive HDMI switch, I am not going to re-arrange everything just to add another player.

I won't be buying into HD-DVD. it was hard enough to convince the family to get the PS3. I don't have money to throw away like that. I will continue to support Blu-Ray and standard DVD.

Not going to happen. Even if I had space on my shelf, I wouldn't get an HD DVD player. If Paramount doesn't want to release Blu-rays, they won't get any of my $$s. Simple as that. I anticipate plenty of BD titles (with or without Paramount on board) coming out that I'll want to add to my collection.

Thanks junior member, but I have a different idea of how this thing will play out.

This is a temporary setback and in the big picture HD DVD is still doomed.

The point is, why is stuff like this happening. Whether it's buying time or not, the fact is HD-DVD has something to be positive and the war prolongs hurting the format in general. The studios behind Blu ray could have ended this war with a full onslaught of great titles, instead they put everything on the back burner and didn't go for the nail in the coffin.
Poor strategy on the Blu side is depressing me. Blu ray will likely win out in the end, but that still doesn't take away the sting of news such as this. End this war now.

I couldn't disagree with your rationality any more actually. Blu til the end period.

That's where I'm at, too - There's enough sweet titles out there to keep me happy for the time being. I can hang w/out the Bourne movies, etc. for a while.
PS - didn't Spielberg direct some or all of the Indy Jones movies? if at least I can get a high quality transfer on Indy 1 during this war, I could def. hold out longer.......
PPS - I've seen the inside of format wars before (CC's "Divx", anyone?). Underhanded tactics are par for the course: CC tried using their sales guys to win the war w/ DVD by paying triple commissions on Divx players. Didn't work, obviously, and was a desparate move at best. same w/ this recent news. Besides, who's to say Sony doesn't take a page from M$ and "buy" Universal Neutrality?

As we speak I am looking at hd-dvd players right now. I have an 360 so it isn't very clostly to support it but man this is disapointing. I just really dont want to have to have my 360 on while watching movies. That thing sounds like an airplane taking off.

I had almost decided to get a HDDVD player around Christmas because the A2's will be cheap and it'd allow me the ability to catch the few HDDVD only titles that come out every month.

With the new announcement, that a Studio is going to exclusively support the current sales loser, Im now on the "fence" about dumping it all together and leaving this format war behind me. PS3 upconversion is just fine.

Hence, the damage to HDM is much more severe than to Blu-ray.
