So yesterday I got to thinking about trends in 4K catalog title disc releases. Have they slowed down? Sped up? Stayed consistent? Who's been releasing the most and when? Well, I got a little carried away and wound up compiling a bunch of info. Not sure how interested everyone else will be in this stuff, but I thought I'd share my findings.
For the record: this is ONLY US releases. I defined a "catalog title" as anything that wasn't a new release movie and/or wasn't released day-and-date with a BD. I excluded documentaries, music/concert films, and TV seasons. I defined quarters as: Q1: January, February, March Q2: April, May, June Q3: July, August, September Q4: October, November, December Enjoy! YEARLY TOTALS 2016: 63 Q1: 24 Q2: 9 Q3: 10 Q4: 20 2017: 82 Q1: 10 Q2: 15 Q3: 23 Q4: 34 2018: 95 Q1: 12 Q2: 31 Q3: 28 Q4: 24 2019: 92 Q1: 7 Q2: 28 Q3: 29 Q4: 28 2020: 93 Q1: 18 Q2: 18 Q3: 21 Q4: 36 2021: 130 Q1: 14 Q2: 30 Q3: 27 Q4: 59 2022: 230 Q1: 34 Q2: 40 Q3: 54 Q4: 102 2023: 58 Q1: 58 LABEL TOTALS 20TH CENTURY FOX (40) 2016: 12 2017: 3 2018: 7 2019: 5 2020: 1 2021: 1 2022: 1 2023: 0 88 FILMS (2) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 1 2023: 1 A24 (3) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 1 2021: 1 2022: 0 2023: 1 ARROW (20) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 4 2021: 8 2022: 8 2023: 0 BLUE UNDERGROUND (17) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 6 2021: 5 2022: 4 2023: 2 CAULDRON (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 0 2023: 1 CINEDIGM (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 1 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 0 2023: 0 CLASSICFLIX (2) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 1 2023: 1 CRITERION (29) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 5 2022: 18 2023: 6 DARK FORCE (3) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 0 2023: 3 DECAL (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 0 2023: 1 DISCOTEK (3) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 1 2020: 0 2021: 2 2022: 0 2023: 0 DISNEY (60) 2016: 0 2017: 1 2018: 5 2019: 32 2020: 18 2021: 2 2022: 1 2023: 1 FULL MOON FEATURES (2) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 1 2023: 1 FUNIMATION (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 1 2021: 0 2022: 0 2023: 0 GUNPOWDER & SKY (2) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 2 2022: 0 2023: 0 IGNITE (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 1 2023: 0 KINO LORBER (37) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 1 2020: 1 2021: 6 2022: 25 2023: 4 LIGHTYEAR (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 0 2023: 1 LIONSGATE (77) 2016: 11 2017: 18 2018: 19 2019: 13 2020: 3 2021: 3 2022: 9 2023: 1 MONDO MACABRO (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 1 2023: 0 MPI (2) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 0 2022: 1 2023: 1 PARAMOUNT (86) 2016: 2 2017: 4 2018: 22 2019: 3 2020: 7 2021: 18 2022: 26 2023: 4 RONIN FLIX (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 1 2022: 0 2023: 0 SCREEN MEDIA (1) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 1 2022: 0 2023: 0 SEVERIN (10) 2016: 0 2017: 0 2018: 0 2019: 0 2020: 0 2021: 4 2022: 6 2023: 0 SHOUT! Thanks for doing this, Paramount was sure a let down this year compared to last.
Edit: Meant last year, forget it's 2020 already, lol. Last edited by JEDGAR1000; 01-17-2020 at 06:33 PM. |

Yeah Paramount pretty much quit with catalog titles for the format. Pretty bad news for us Star Trek fans

Love this breakdown! Thanks a lot for the effort. It's good to see the stats;
... but it also shows that this is definitely gonna be a slooooow burn for releasing the staples of home video. These studios are being conservative except for "blip" years... Disney had 2019 as their blip year. Paramount had 2018. |

Fantastic stuff dude! You deserve a medal for compiling this.
People can b!tch about Paramount but they've followed the 'cash in' formula religiously, i.e. if there's a sequel or reboot or remake or anniversary then there's a good chance they'll get it out there on 4K, 2018 seeing the latest MI movie which is why the other movies in that series got released on 4K. But leaving out the remastered Beverly Hills Cop movies on 4K disc isn't a great sign, I still think they're waiting on the fourth movie to maximise the cash-in potential but it's just as likely they won't release them at all. What makes me really do a sad though is Fox, e.g. 12 titles in 2016 and then only just a little more than that in the next three years combined. Wow. And Disnee's blip is just that, their catalogue UHD support was DISGRACEFUL before late 2019 which is why I give them as much shit as I do, so let's see what they come up with in 2020 before hailing 2019's onslaught as anything more than a cynical pre-D+ cash-in. And the above stats for Lionsgate and Universal show why I regard them as highly as I do, their stuff is NOT perfect but they've both been very consistent. Nod to Warners, although they've slowed down in the last couple of years. |

Thank you for creating this interesting thread.
It's kind of a bummer that Paramount didn't do very much catalog titles last year, but then again most other studios seemed to slowed down a little bit. 2019 was probably a good year for Disney though. |

To be fair in my counter argument most of their 4K releases have been 2K upscales. Now, I understand that's not as big of a deal with animation, but come on. Also, their neutered Atmos mixes don't help. Disney has money to burn, bury, and do it all over again while still sitting on a massive pile of it

I was only thinking about this the other day.
Kudos to the OP for posting. I wonder how the numbers (after 4 years) stack up against the first 4 years of Blu-Ray? I have around 100 BR's and 30 4K discs. So far, only 2 are duplicated. Most of the 100 BR's I have contain a lot of my top 30 or so movies of all time. Given the anemic levels of back catalog releases, i'm not holding my breath that i'll have a lot more duplications any time soon. |
