The comic book movies have incredible advantages coming right out of the gate. It wouldn't be the same for anime even in the slightest. Someone could make the best anime film the world has ever seen and it would still only make a small fraction of box office revenue than The Avengers. There is even a good amount of the American public, I'd say somewhere between 20 and 50%, that hate anime for no good reason; they hate anime just bc its anime. It is seen by juvenile and/or perverted by a good amount of the populace. |

It's just a matter of not having a pipeline to make it and that costs some money, which most of the industry probably isn't willing to spend. I'm not sure if the Clip Studio software that most of the industry uses does 4K output at this time, but that's definitely one part of the pipeline that has to be in place, while the rest is just a matter of computing power, which can be easily addressed with current software solutions. Work can easily be done at lower resolutions and then rendered at high-resolution with graphical embellishments if wanted, but the hardware and software for high-speed rendering have to be in place for that and that is one area in which the 2D industry hasn't caught up with their 3D VFX/animation cousins, who are using both distributed rendering and dedicated stand-alone nodes of GPUs.

I remembered someone coming back from the screening of GOTHICMADE said Mamoru Nagano not willing to convert this 2160p animated film into 1080p so no plans for BD releases, and there were no UHD back then. But I just can't find much information about the production of this film to verify.

Hi guys. A very interesting discussion. I'm assuming there's still been no progress or rumors on a 4K release of either Akira or better yet, Macross Plus?

if no audio commentary for akira 4k then its a wasted opportunity. same with any upcoming oshii titles, get him to do one for patlabor 2!! if they cant get the director, then animation director would be the next best thing

I'm guessing it has no English subs or English dub? How is the 4K compare to the Full HD version?
I have never seen Akira before, and I was thinking of buying the BD that I saw at Best Buy. |

Makoto Shinkai's latest, Weathering With You, is getting an English-friendly 4K UHD release in Japan on May 27th: https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/TBR-30000D
Likely another upscale, so wonder if it is worth dropping 12,000 yen ($111 currently) on the Collector's Edition, or just getting the standard BD at 4800 yen ($45 right now): https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/TBR-30001D. I COULD wait for GKIDS' US Blu-ray, but that probably won't hit until end of year and I am sure, while it will look fine, will have a lower bitrate than the Japanese import... |

They suffer from more DNR than the 0079 Trilogy does, which are easily the best UHDs Sunrise has put out, but I still think they are an improvement in general over the old BDs. The included BDs also were reworked and don't have the windowboxing issues the old ones did, though I believe they were created from the same DNR'd master. Both movies were 35mm sources though so the grain was already pretty fine as it is, so I don't think the DNR hurt it all too terribly.
