Thanks. So frustrating there’s no perfect solution. How much money could they possibly be saving?

I emailed the studio and they were basically “tough, it’s US only.” So now I’m concerned if I buy the disney movies from amazon.com, my digital copy won’t work. Not to mention the movie rewards points. Even though the program went downhill.

Usually the Marvel/Disney ones work with Google Play and iTunes.

Not sure about Universal/Paramount

So insightful! Care to explain why, or would you rather just come in here , dump four words and leave without contributing anything else?

So if they have a MoviesAnywhere code (on the back of the movie) then that will work for sure if you redeem in the US.

However, I think I had problems with Lionsgate releases. Those codes give you a Google code which only works for US Google accounts.

How hard is it to put the French on one side and English on the other side so we have the option?

Hard, no, but cost of printing double sided is more than double.

The real question is why Fox releases are able to make the french smaller than the english while Disney makes they both the same sizes.

Because Disney gives as much importance to French as to English. As a French speaker, it's nice to see that the company promotes French, even though I'd prefer to have the choice between a full French cover and a full English cover.

It’s really the stacked titles in the spines of the slipcovers which looks the worst. The designers should think to giving the languages their own sides so they can be displayed nicer on the shelves. These are permanent on our shelves and shouldn’t be treated like boxes of cereal.

Lol, don't fool yourself into thinking they respect or promote 20% of the country, they're legally mandated to have french packaging and this is the cheapest possible option for them.

I live in Quebec, Canada, and yes I speak French. However, I'm as bothered than you for the bilingual covers, but I really don't think they are THAT important. Are you seriously watching the spine of your collection?! When I really hate a cover, I do my own custom.

What you must know and understand is that it isn't the citizens that requested having French on the covers, but the Government. Every movie with a French audio track must have a bilingual cover. What pisses off us even more is the fact that, because of that stupid law, some US studio will simply don't add the French audio track on older titles (or simply limit the release to the USA) so that they don't have to bother making a bilingual cover. I don't mind it personally (I'm bilingual), but my family and some of my friends doesn't understand English and would prefer a Sub in French.

Yes, I'm seriously watching the spines of my collection.

I'm not sure how to address the rest of your post, though - there's so much to unpack there, lol!

It's not really an issue of having french on the cover at all.

It's just coming from a design standpoint, it looks like they just stuck the logo on there without a second thought.

Toy Story 4 is absolutely the worst by far.

Is this another thing that we can blame Trudeau for? Haha

Does the Canadian Blu-ray slipcover of "The Rise of Skywalker / L'Ascencion de Skywalker" have both titles on the spine?

Yea, just like the rest of the 2019/2020 re-releases sadly. The steelbook however only the paper around the outside had French, the actual steelbook does not thankfully. But that was $51 after tax so it's not really like I won anything...

This by far. It's not the I hate that French exists, I respect their culture and all, and that we are lucky enough to be a bilingual country, and everything in between. But there are AESTHETICALLY PLEASING ways to go about putting French on stuff. Most other movies have English large and French small, the title in English on one side of the spine and French on the other, a reversible cover that is fully French. The way Disney is doing it completely ruins the look of the cover, where a cover designed to have one logo now has been squashed to have 2 full-sized, smaller logos as opposed to one large one that the design was intended to have. The worst offenders are the films that have like one letter change, because now I get to look at CAPTAIN MARVEL/CAPITAINE MARVEL or DOCTOR STRANGE/DOCTEUR STRANGE on my shelf instead of just the English, as if French speakers didn't know that the movies are Captain Marvel or Doctor Strange. It looks dumb. Not to mention movies like Cinderella or Tangled that apparently need to have a different name in French. As if they don't realize that Cendrillon is Cinderella. There's a whole slew of silly second titles, and that brings me to Toy Story 4, where the design literally has the French logo front and centre, and the English one shoved to the side. And because Histoire de Jouets is a much longer name than Toy Story, it effectively makes the French title appear to be much larger.

Moral of the story, it's annoying and there's plenty of better ways to go about it that other movie companies have already done. Not asking for English only, as nice as that would be, but at least try to make it look nice.

And yes, we are staring at the spines, as that is what is displayed on the shelf. So that sucks, too.
