Watch the doc. They explore it at length.

Caught this last night via Redbox and thought it was good but not great. Some of that perhaps could be due to all of the hype it received and while I think it was very well made (the Blu-ray looks and sounds fantastic), it was a one and done for me, I would never watch it again.

This was definitely overhyped as a movie but the cast is exceptional. Ana de Armas was incredible, this is the first thing I've seen her in. She definitely is an up and coming Hollywood star. It's a 3 star movie but elevated to 4 stars by the wonderful cast.

I gave it 5 Stars. I would have chosen 4-1/2 had that been an option, but I rounded up. I had such a good time that I've already watched it two full times and most of a third. I'm completely, totally all-in for a sequel.

Watched this last night for the first time.

I think it’s pretty good...very well made...well acted.

But it certainly didn’t blow me away or anything
.
There’s nothing about it that’s particularly original.

Borrows a lot of things from various movies of the past.

Not going to say that I saw the ending coming, but there was nothing about the big reveal that was terribly surprising imo.

It’s a fun movie.

I may watch it one or two more times and probably leave it at that.

I love this, been following Johnson's work since Brick. He's always creative and does something unexpected. His work on Fly was a fresh in the midst of the usual episodes. This is now at the second spot in the Oscar nominees this year I like the most (while this is not a best picture nominee I seriously think it should have been).

1. Parasite
2. Knives Out
3. Ford v Ferrari
4. The Irishman
5. Marriage Story
6. Jojo Rabbit
7. Joker
8. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

Yet to see 1917 and Little Women.

I just saw this over the weekend. What a superb film! Wonderfully plotted and acted, I loved the twists and turns and Daniel Craig's accent, lol, but all his acting, and Ana de Armas was wonderful, as was the entire cast, and I was so surprised by the end!

Watch a library rental; waited 3 months for my turn.

I found this mystery affair a confoundedly appalling experience.

Do me a favour and leave the knife in.

Good movie.

...nothing original about it.

I 100% agree. It's very good at recreating this genre. BUT if you already familiar with this genre, then you already seen this story before a dozen times.

You could say the same about Star Wars, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Scream or Kill Bill. Just because a movie in a specific genre doesn't do anything "new" doesn't mean it can't be an excellent example of it.

I've seen dozens of whodunnits of this nature and read many of Christie's novels and I found that even within the conventions of the genre, there were plenty of original elements,
[Show spoiler]such as the notion that the victim actually did slit his own throat
for one.

Honestly, how many movies are "original"? Roger Ebert once said, "It's not what a movie's about; it's how it's about it." A truer statement regarding movies has never been said.

True. I always say it's not having a good story that counts, it's having good storytelling.

I love binging Monk, Psych and Castle. They each have different levels of comedy. They all deal with solving murders but in different ways. It is striking how many similar story lines or themes exist between the three series. It's not how many ways you can kill someone. It's how many ways can you kill someone and make it require a special observational skill to solve it. They all had a Santa get killed but they each solved in their own unique ways.

Lucas himself said Star Wars was fashioned after the sci-fi serials he watched growing up. Not many seem to mind even to day the origin story came from the 50's.

I used to tell my wife about episodes of Castle, and a lot of times she would say, "They did that plot on Bones last season!".

Your post is right on the nose.
