I've had both over the years and I'd say that Direct TV is the better of the two but If I had my choice I'd go for Verizon Fios TV over fiber network....I hear that nothing comes close to picture quality. Unfortunately it's only in major market areas served by Verizon at this time.

I have Dish but am thinking of just canceling all together and going with Digital Local HD Channels for free + my Blu/Dvd collection. I also can check out movies at local libraries for free (including new blu ray's) so I may just go without myself.

I also am NOT a sports fan so I could care less about sports channels.

I have had HD DirecTV for over 3 years now. Generally very pleased, but it is not inexpensive. On occasion I do lose signal (more so for HD) in bad weather.

I can't really comment on either since I have Bright House cable...YUCK! I do have friends with DirectTV HD service and it looks great and they have plenty of HD channels, more then I get from cable. Dish Network claims to have the only all HD channel line-up available, but I don't know anyone with Dish, soooo.

I agree with this. If you can get Fios in your area you should give it a try. Unfortunately, it's not available in my area either, but would love to have it here since I'm sure (hope) Verizon will be able to offer the broadband internet and phone service with the HD TV service as a package deal.

I'd like to have Directv, but the website doesn't show that is has basic channels (ABC, CBS, Fox, etc.) My mom also had this and she only had stuff like TNN, Fuse, Mtv, Comedy Central.. but no BASIC channels.

I've had both and currently have Dish Network. I didn't have HD while I was with DirecTV though, so it's not a fair comparison. Either is better than the Comcast service in my area. My inlaws have Fios where they live and I'll probably drop Dish for that when it becomes available in north Florida.

I've had Dish for almost 10 years now. I'm waiting to see what these satellite companies do when we convert permanently over to digital over-the-air in June. I may consider a switch to Direct TV, but I'm looking for the best HD deal I can get.

best price is gonna be dish network, they had promotion $9,99 for their basic hd channel for 6 months, direct tv basic hd is crap. you has to more to get some decent channel, dish network has more better hd channel in lower price, but if you got money, of course dish network is better since it has more choice.

I think you need to look harder, because they should. DirecTV is notorious in my area for not offering our local basic channels (the ones you mentioned) in HD, but there are relatively inexpensive workarounds for that. They still offer them in standard definition. They will soon have all local HD markets, but they do not have mine yet. Dish Network just announced that they'll be carrying the locals in HD in my market, so it stands to reason that DirecTV will follow sooner rather than later if they have any interest in keeping customers.

That being said, I still love DirecTV despite its lack of local HD channels (which as I mentioned can still be had with a couple add-ons; I've even got my HD locals going through my HD DVR). I've got a subscription that costs me about $60 per month, and I've got four boxes in the house: two for the main home theater, and one in each bedroom. I get tons of HD, as well as my local Comcast (!!!) sports station in HD.

Well it goes both ways. DirecTv has channels that Dish does not while Dish has channels DirecTv doesn't. For example some channels DirecTv has is Spike, Comedy Central, FX, Speed. And most of the regional sport networks. While Dish has like Lifetime and Lifetime movie network, Travel channel. I know there's more but can't think of any others.

Same views as the post above. DirecTV is lacking in local HD in our area, but overall I'm happy with the HD programming I am getting.

DirecTv also has MLB Network and that's a channel Dish doesn't even offer. Most cable companies have it but in SD
