Japan Netflix's Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (April 23, 2020)

Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series) and Shinji Aramaki (APPLESEED series) will jointly direct, and the original cast of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, including Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Otsuka, and Koichi Yamadera, are all returning. An all-new story featuring dynamic cyberpunk action and Motoko Kusanagi and her team is about to be told.
The animation is by Production I.G and SOLA DIGITAL ARTS.

The Netflix original anime series Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 begins exclusive worldwide streaming on April 23, 2020.
It was stated that the new series will have two seasons of 12 episodes each, with every episode running 23 minutes.

The Story: In the year 2045, after an economic disaster known as the Synchronized Global Default, rapid developments in AI propelled the world to enter a state of “Sustainable War”. However, the public is not aware of the threat that AI has towards the human race.

Full-body cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi and her second-in-command Batou are former members of Public Security Section 9, who are now hired mercenaries traveling hot devastated American west coast. This land is full of opportunity for the major and her team, they utilize their enhanced cyberbrains and combat skills from their time working in Section 9. However, things get complicated with the emergence of “post humans,” who have extreme intelligence and physical powers. The members of Section 9 comeback together again in order to face this new threat.

Really hyped for this! (even if it's in CGI - any new GITS is great!)

Nice. I liked the movie and the live action movie.. This should be interesting. Is There going to be an English version though? I hate having to read subtitles. Dubbing sucks too but I've been trying to get used to it so that I can enjoy more content I wouldn't normally because of not speaking the language.

Ugh. Looks like shit. Terrible CGI crap for a beloved franchise. So sad.

I like the animation style, but then I'm not a hard core anime fan (but I enjoy some) Maybe that's why. I can understand hard core fans being offended by it I guess.

Well than I guess that is what Netflix was going for. Catering to the masses instead of the fans with cheap garbage.

It looks like one of the cheap Netflix kid shows.

Maybe. But I guess it's a visual preference. I've never been a big fan of the anime look/style even though I've enjoyed some of the movies a lot. But if they were doing that it would be better if there was an English version... At least in my opinion. Because I'm always going to enjoy something in my own language better.

Ghost in the Shell has such great heritage. The original movie is an iconic masterpiece, one that is just as amazing now as it was 25 years ago, the sequel less so, but it’s still very good. Stand Alone Complex is one of the best tv shows of all time, animated or live action.
This just looks naff, and nowhere near the level we should expect from this legendary franchise.

Guys, you know it is directed by Kenji Kamiyama, right? It's the one who did Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. It is, in a way, a continuation of the original TV Series. I don't think anyone can judge by the trailer yet.

Why does this professional production look like a bad fan film made with a video game engine. I saw the original trailer and thought it was some fan project... but this is real... yikes.

Anime production in Japan isn't what it was years ago. They must deal with terribly lower budget, and new anime series are rarely profitable. They must often rely on CGI and cut in the production cost. The important factor will be the story. There is many websites and videos explaining what is going on in the anime market.

Disagree. A great story can easily be ruined by a shit adaptation. Just look at how Berserk turned out. Basically unwatchable. Even with the anime market the way it is plenty of companies including Production IG are still able to make great series with beautiful animation. This is just Netflix backing it and being cheap. Even a great director can't save a series if the studio screws them. CGI hasn't come along enough yet to be the go to for anime adaptations especially for a series like this. Only studio that has the right to do CGI these days is Orange. If you can't do it right I say don't do it at all.

Sure, I hear ya. But not every studios can keep up with the new reality. I bought Berserk 2016-2017 on Blu-ray (ordered it this week in fact). Shitty production doesn't make me hate a story. But I might not be the best reference here. I also loved GITS Arise a lot - so much that I imported the 5th movie not even released in the US - and almost everyone hated it.

Guaranteed that a lot more people are gonna appreciate Arise after this airs thats for sure. I also imported all five volumes of Arise cause I love the franchise. This I just don't understand how this came to be from a company like Production IG and just can't get behind it. Oh well. I'll just rewatch the original series again.

Damn tough crowd. I’ll be checking it out and giving it a chance. Art style aside, it will either be good or bad; I’m speaking for myself. As long as it engages me, I’m there.

Wonder if it’s getting the UHD treatment? 4K/DV/ATMOS Please!

Does Amazon ever sell that one in a region coded format that's playable in the US ( for those of us who aren't region-free )?

I have bought the Japanese Edition, the only version coded in Region A (Same as US and Canada). It has English subtitles, and can be found on Amazon here!

There are other versions in Germany and France, but they are both Region B locked.

I’ll check it out but it goes without saying that the animation is inferior to the original.

How did I know it would be CG? So predictable, these studios. I haven't watched any CG animations in years and have no desire to do so again.

Well, not sure I'll say it was "predictable"... I mean, the project was announced back in April 2017 and in December 2018, they revealed that it was to be a 3D CGI series. It's not really a surprise. You can read discussions about it in the others GITS threads here on the forum starting 2 years ago.

Fans complained about it on Day 1, and I think also complained about it myself! But hey, now the trailer is here, and all I care about is to watch a new GITS story!

Many people that judge the live action movie or these new series haven't even read the three original manga. I have the deluxe editions, and I have read them carefully (and painfully). I must say that they are far from being perfect. GITS 1 and 1.5 are okay, but there is so much technical stuff and commentary notes in them that it is, again, not an easy manga to read. Ghost in the Shell 2 is ... brain damaging. I needed a full system reboot after reading it!
