Default PS3 set up question...

Here are my products:

Sony PS3
Sony Grand Wega:
http://reviews.cnet.com/projection-t...-31453800.html
Sony STR-DE685 Receiver:
http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...-20016428.html

My question is this...Do I simply need to hook up the TV and PS3 via an HDMI cable and then the Receiver and PS3 via an Optical Digital Cable?

Also, will the PS3 optimize everything for me? That is my main objective: to optimize my set up.

Also, if there is anything else I can do to make it better, please feel free to guide me.

if by optimize you are upgrading from an SDTV and TV speakers you'll have a huge jump.
and yes the PS3 will take care of the surround sound and vide, plug and play. just go into the settings and make sure you have the proper resolutions and codecs that your receiver can handle.

if i may add, although your TV and receiver are outdated, it'll still do you well to have a lively gaming experience.

Thanks for the help! It appears the PS3 adjusts the settings automatically so that I can't screw it up, lol. Also, while I know my stuff is outdated as a school teacher and new father, it is about the best I can do now. When I bout the TV and receiver 4 years ago, I was the talk of all my friends though...

Thanks again.

Yes. That's what you'll need to do with that setup.

The PS3 will automatically detect and optimize a lot of it. But there are some elements that are impossible to auto detect or that aren't under the PS3's control at all. So after you have that setup, go wandering through the PS3 menus and see if there are any settings you want to fiddle with. Full range RGB color comes to mind. The PS3 can't know if the TV will actually display full range correctly, so I think it doesn't turn it on by default.

Other than that, you'll probably need to fiddle with your TV's image settings. TV's usually have different settings per input, and the HDMI input is usually set to waaaaaaaaay too much contrast by default. So play a Blu-ray and adjust your contrast back until it looks natural. You'll probably want to adjust your sharpness setting from factory default as well as that one is usually also set badly by default.

Ok, thanks. That is great advice. How do I know if my TV can support Full Color RGB? Also, I would like to fiddle with the settings (especiall on my TV) but I literally have no idea where to start or how to make it "pop". I'm just afraid I will jack it up, lol. Any standard advice in this area would be great...

i think RGB only relates to component use, also, don't color tune your LCD TV to its blacks. that'll be like tuning a set of speakers for higher frequencies w/out a tweeter.

i've been told that tuning the greens to be true color on an LCD is best considering it's an abundant color withing most movies/games and it's rarely got as much gradiation as a blue would.
