Default .3 channels

Cousin has a powerd sub and 2 tower speakers with powered sub's in them. Is there a way to have all 3 subs hooked up? He has an Onkyo 706 receiver.

For the powered sub, he should connect a subwoofer cable from the LFE output (sub pre-out) on the back of the receiver to the subwoofer.

The two powered subs in the towers are meant to provide low frequency extension for the front speakers. They should not be connected to LFE output. Normally, if your receiver does not have pre-outs, you leave the jumpers on the back of the speakers that connect the subwoofers to the midrange and tweeters in place and run a set of speaker wires from the back of the receiver to the right and left speakers.

If you have pre-outs on the back of the receiver, a better way is to remove only the jumpers that connect the subwoofers to the midrange (don't remove the jumpers that connect the midrange to the tweeters) and connect a subwoofer cable from the right FRONT right on the back of the receiver to the subwoofer input on the back of the right speaker and another cable from the left FRONT pre-out to the left speaker. This way, you are essentially bi-amping the front speakers and will hear better quality sound.

So all he should need to do is plug the towers in and be all set?

I will be going to his house this weekend and will try and get some pics of the back of his towers.

Since they are built in powered subs within the speaker, he should just have to connect the speaker cable to the receiver/amp like normal and then the lfe to the external sub.

Yes.

If he has pre-out for the fronts on the receiver, he should consider the bi-amp option that I mentioned. All he has to do is get two additonal sub cables. There will be less pressure on his receiver and the sound will be better. That is the way I have my Definitive Technology Super Towers hooked.

If he bi-amps them would he be limited to a 5. setup, he is currently running a 6.1 setup.

Or can he bi-amp the fronts using the front L/R preouts and still run the others the way he is now?

I assume the subs in the front speakers are powered and have built-in amplifiers. That is the way with my Def Tech speakers. If they are powered, you are using those to bi-amp the front speakers. The built-in amps run the built-in subs and the receiver will run the midrange and tweeters. This will not affect 6.1 setup.

Will have to talk with him this weekend. I believe the Onk 706 has preouts. If so he is in business. His wife is already complaining that his speakers are too much as they are. She hates it when we get to talking about this stuff
