Default Non-Labeled Speaker Wire. Please help!

My new home that I'm moving into has all of the prewiring done for a 5.1 surround sound system. Problem is the speaker wire is not labeled. So at the outlet in the wall I have no idea which is are the fronts/center/surrounds etc.

Whats an easy way of figuring this out?

You can see the room in my HT gallery, and the outlet is in the bottom of wall directly in front of the speaker wire.

Thanks

A battery and a small light bulb.

So do I just connect the battery to one end and the lighthouse to the other? Can it just be a regular AA battery ?

Thanks so much for your help

No, please don't connect a lighthouse. It may blow.

Yes, if you have a flash light, take it apart and use the battery and the light bulb.

You can do this easily with an ohm meter or a multimeter set to measure resistance (ohms) as well. You just twist one end of the wire pair together, and then touch the probes of the meter to the other ends of the wire pairs until you see the resistance jump up on your meter-- that will be the other end of your speaker wire pair.

Or you can also connect the speakers (which you will eventually do anyways) then play a cd and cycle through the connections to determine which is which by the speaker that is playing.

Fox and hound is good too. Not very expensive but if you chase wires periodically its a good investment.

That's probably what I would have done...... although battery/light seems like a good idea too.

I'd just connect the speakers and run the test-tones

If you still have problems, PM me I live in St. Cloud. It would take me 5 minutes to ring your lines out with my meters.
