Default Suggested ways to rescue Captain Richard Phillips...

What if the U.S. Navy sent some submergible stealth vessel to somewhere beneath the lifeboat and then had some elite sailors ascend and surprise the pirates from below?

Or, have the submergible stealth vessel fire some kind of non-lethal weapon that would knock out everyone without serious injury, and then swoop in.

Or, have some snipers on some ships take out the pirates once they get a good shot. They could conceal the snipers by distance or by those funky mirrors which would retract when they were ready to shoot.

I think if a ransom is paid, the home country of the pirates should be required to pay half of it.

Problem is it's a covered lifeboat, so you can rule out the sniping, and it'd be hard for some Navy guys to sneak up out of the water and get into it, without the pirates just shooting the captain.

I thought about the SEALS too. If this goes on much longer, I wouldn't be surprised if they're used.

Holding US citizens hostage in today's world is a huge mistake and will not get you anywhere.

I thought people still watch movies (Taken).

So we should send Liam Neeson?

If we combine his character in Taken, Gangs of New York, SW Ep. I, and Batman Begins, we would have some sort of Super Neeson.

We really need those guns from Eraser.

Couldn't they just sneak under the ship and poke a hole in it and through the hole pump through some kind of disabling gas? Or why not just sink the boat? If the pirates know they are sinking, they may want to be "rescued" just as much as the captain. They may also figure, they have no leverage now that they are sinking -- either they get captured and get off easier for not carrying through with their threat or they get captured and bear a greater punishment.

Maybe instead of sinking it, they should just wait til they run out of fuel. How many pirates are on there? Maybe they will be so tired and hungry that they will all fall asleep.

The military is working on some miniature flying robots that look like birds or insects ... maybe they could use those in the future in these situations.

The U.S. went to war with some pirates once. I wish there were some ethical way to have some kind of retribution. Is Somalia doing enough to stop the pirates?

I dont mean to be a jerk, but I say: Start killing the families of the pirates. OR start killing the pirates that we have locked up now.

Reminds me of when some insurgents caught an American trucker in Iraq and demanded that Saudi Arabia release prisoners. They cut off dudes head and the next day the Saudi family ordered the execution of the prisoners. Bam.

I have no qualms with shoving back harder than they are willing to deal with.

OR give them 12 hours to release the prisoner, and then at T+1 we sink every related floatie in the AO. Every lifeboat, raft, small boat, mother ship, captured ship. Everything...

One American now is worth showing the world we are not the weenie country everyone thinks we are.

It's time we go back to the methods of a couple hundred years ago. No Quarter. If your involved in piracy, and are caught, you're dead.

I wonder why we are so soft with these people.

Is this American guys life worth so much that we are willing to put so many more at risk? We have the perfect opportunity to show how seriously we take this kind of thing, and instead "talks are cut off" because we want to put these idiots in prison? I dont want a dime of my money going to let this scum live in a prison...I would rather pay that money to a ammo fund for the Navy.

If we do anything but kill every one of them, we are opening the door to the same thing happening for the rest of time. I know one thing for sure, if the risk of touching an American was that the CIA would drop 1000lb bombs on my families hut in a village, I am sure I would avoid those ships as much as I could!

Story's over.

The captain is free. The pirates were killed. It's breaking news, I guess.

3 killed, one captured. Rumor is that Navy SEALS were involved. Maybe they used one of my ideas?

I am very proud to be an American today We need a bigger Navy.
