Default suggested receivers for 2 speaker set up.

I just set up a new KDL46s4100 Sony with a LG BD370.I'm not happy with the audio levels watching BR movies .I am looking to purchase a new receiver with HDMI hookups ,but only planning to use 2 speakers, small room,5.1 not really needed, etc,.Was looking to spend less than $250. if possible.I'd like some advice on receivers to look at if possible.I have yamy hooked up to my other HD tv and am impressed with its quality even though its 12 years old,R-V902 model, but will consider all makes. Thanks in advance for the info.

With a $250 budget your best bet is the used market like Craigslist, Audiogon and eBay. That wouldn't even cover the Yammy 663, which is the receiver I would suggest since you like Yamaha.

1. You will not need HDMI for 2 channel audio, you could use the analog stereo connection

2. A stereo amplifier will do a better job pushing 2 speakers than a 5.1 or 7.1 amp would.

I have an Onkyo 8555 stereo amplifier, and i paid under $300 for it, and as far as 2 channel performance, it easily out-does the 705 I paid almost $1000 for.

Absolutely agree. I ran my old Sony CRT for years (starting in the early 80's) connected to a 2-channel amp. Forget about the bells & whistles...get a brand-name 2-channel amp and you'll be fine.

I would recommend getting something that will allow you to set up 3 channel sound.... Although many movies may offer a lossless stereo track, for those that don't, you'll want the performance of a center-channel to get the bulk of your dialog.

Heres a really good deal if your using 2channel stereo and want to change to HDMI one day. It doesn't have the newest codecs like Dolby Digital TrueHd or DTS-MA, but is still a good receiver for the price. Denon 1609 for $239.99

I would go with this Denon AVR-1609 OR Denon AVR-788.
Both are under the $250 and plus you can even do the 3 Channel like Beta Man stated.
