I highly doubt that it is. Will still buy though. That is a nice package.

Well, mine will be here on Friday from Bullmoose. Excited to watch this as I haven't seen it in a very long time and never owned it in any format.

Watched my copy the other night and the film looked great. Sound felt a bit strange so, so I had to put on the subtitles. Either way, it was a good release.

Criterion probably performed a lil bit of their trademark in-house sound-krunchifying.

If the review on this site is to be trusted, they downmixed it to mono from the original Dolby Stereo.

No, that was a review error. It’s in stereo.

Just hard to hear the dialogue. The background noise seemed really high, like steam noises and such. I had a hard time hearing a lot of the dialogue when the character were speaking more casually and not yelling.

Damn, I hate that. I also hate when the background music is played so loud, you can't hear what they are saying...

Yeah, there are quiet a few films that do this for whatever reason. It's especially hard to understand John Merrick to begin with, without the dialogue being lower. Either way, it wasn't horrible, just a challenge at times which is why I had to turn on the subtitles.

It is meant to sound that way. The sound effects play a very important role especially in this film and are at least as important as the dialogue.

Did lynch ever state that? Or is this your artistic interpretation?

It’s based on an understanding of the sound design of Lynch’s entire oeuvre.

while I can't speak for the Criterion release, I do have to note the 4K Studiocanal release, the sound has such a wide dynamic range; while the dialogue is always discernible, the overall design of the movie, the sound is intricate, powerful when it needs it to be, an omnipresent rumble in some scenes
