Strange how? Like too low?

Just hard to hear the dialogue. The background noise seemed really high, like steam noises and such. I had a hard time hearing a lot of the dialogue when the character were speaking more casually and not yelling.

Damn, I hate that. I also hate when the background music is played so loud, you can't hear what they are saying...

Yeah, there are quiet a few films that do this for whatever reason. It's especially hard to understand John Merrick to begin with, without the dialogue being lower. Either way, it wasn't horrible, just a challenge at times which is why I had to turn on the subtitles.

while I can't speak for the Criterion release, I do have to note the 4K Studiocanal release, the sound has such a wide dynamic range; while the dialogue is always discernible, the overall design of the movie, the sound is intricate, powerful when it needs it to be, an omnipresent rumble in some scenes

Did Criterion fix the missing fade on the StudoCanal? Probably not but its an easy fix.

Lynch was involved with the restoration, so why would he need to "state" it when he's responsible for it?

That could just be it. While I struggled with hearing the dialogue others may not. The sounds of the film are very powerful which was something I wasn't prepared for as I like the focus to more on what the characters are saying versus a louder score and effects.

Did they add the fade back in?
