Well after reading all that and checking everything. I'm completely convinced I did set everythign up right and I'm hearing what I should be hearing. Now I just need to upgrade and update the rest of my equipment.

That was a good article--been having problems with that aspect of the PS3.

Looks like I'll need to get a new receiver, as my Onkyo does have HDMI passthrough, but I believe there's a loss in signal quality when the signal goes through.

Heck, this walkthrough makes the configuration on the PS3 look easier than a Joe Ganz to Todd Peterson touchdown in the 2009 Gator Bowl.

Only 96kHz for upper limit? Either the receiver does not have the DACs or the non-BC PS3 does not do 176.4kHz.

i think i remember reading somewhere that if you are only using a 5.1 setup that you should uncheck all the 7.1 settings on the ps3 so that if you are watching a movie with 7.1 sound (hellboy2, rambo) the ps3 will downmix the audio so that its not running channels that are not there. or something and stuff
