Default Borders might disappear...

I hope not... Borders definitely doesn't have the best prices, but I've always liked their selection and atmosphere. This would suck

People use their store like a library that serves lattee's and baked goods. Go buy a cup of coffee, sit at the table and read the book you were thinking of buying for free.

Of course they're going to be in trouble. It's a hangout, not a store. That type of business model doesn't work for very long, especially when the inventory you have to keep is huge.

Uncompetitive, unprofitable? Take it behind the barn and put two in its head.

Should be the same for any non-financial business.

A financial business should go into FDIC receivership.

I agree, and have done just that. The high prices don't help either.

It's amazing how many kids hang out in the manga section.

you can't read an entire book in one sitting at borders. there is no way. try reading atlas shrugged in one sitting for example. also most people who read mess up the binding on the books and therefore will have to pay for the book. i think the lounge area is most for magazines and such as well as a place for college students to do work. sure, people can read their books there too. i'm sure it happens though i rarely see it.

they actually don't have high prices at all on most of their items. some of their blu-rays are a little high, but for the most part they have reasonable prices on everything just about. they're having an incredible dvd sale at the moment. it's insane really.

Indeed. I occassionally find a great deal on BDs there (such as their current 40% off), but for the most part, why would I buy blu-rays, DVDs, CDs at a bookstore? It specializes in print media, not video/audio (with the exception of audiobooks, of course).

I buy all of my books and calendars at Borders as a member of their free Rewards program. MUCH cheaper than Amazon 95% of the time...

+1

Their regular book coupons have saved me a lot of cash over all of the alternatives.

at this rate, there will be no more stores left. First was Tweeters then CC, Blockbuster is in major trouble and might be closing and now Borders. I guess Barnes and Nobles is going to be the next casualty of finanace. Soon shopping online is going to be the only choice.

True about the one sitting thing....but I've known more than a few people who were going to buy a book (literally were planning to purchase it), and read a few chapters and then opted not to. An old co-worker of mine didn't have a TV and she would go to borders every night, and read while nursing a coffee. She actually read 3 books this way, no joke. I'd even go there once in a while if I needed to get some tech notes and didn't feel like spending 70 bucks to buy the book. Before they shrink wrapped many of those, that is

It depends on the area I'm sure, but I often am surprised at how many people sit and 'try out' books that they used to just buy outright.

Legendary deals on the clearance tables though, I have to say that. It is sad to see stores go under, but no business/organization is too big to fail or worth saving. Can't compete, nice knowing you. Open up the market for someone who is capable of succeeding.

I will never buy clothes nor food online. I buy plenty of things at Target and Bestbuy.

Stores will be around for a while. The ones that adapt are the one's that will survive.

but how can they adapt when the economy is forcing so many of their competitors to close? if there competitors can't make it what makes them think they'll be able to?

why is that? they're actually pretty reasonable on their prices. i'll admit their blu-ray prices aren't great, but they're certainly not bad. and their prices on everything else is very reasonable. they had tinted windows for $9.99. that's not bad.

Maybe yours is better but at my local Borders the prices are laughable, although I will splurge for a hard to find CD here and there

And yet, off they go to join CC.

I remember the same kind of excuse making about how everyone was wrong about that little electronics chain, and now, all that is left is humongous buildings with nothing inside.

They were in trouble even in good economic times. Business is —survival of the fittest. The recent store closings of CompUSA and Circuit City were no big surprises to anyone and the loss of Borders would be no different. Recessions allow the economy to "clean shop" and make way for better and more innovative retailing concepts. It's always a bummer to see working people lose their jobs but we've all been there one time or another. You just start beating the pavement to find a new opportunity. Nothing is guaranteed in life as they say but "death and taxes."
